Germany’s New 41.3°C Record Set at Controversial Wastewater Plant Station – Is It Really the Hottest?

Yesterday (June 26, 2026), the DWD weather station at Saarbrücken-Burbach (the one at the wastewater treatment plant) recorded a preliminary all-time national high for Germany of 41.3 °C.

This broke the previous June record at the station by a significant margin and was the highest temperature reported anywhere in Germany that day.

It also contributed to new monthly (June) records for the site.

The reading happened during a strong heatwave affecting parts of Western and Central Europe.

All-Time National Record: The 41.3 °C reading unofficially breaks Germany’s all-time highest temperature record of 41.2 °C, which was previously shared by Tönisvorst and Duisburg-Baerl from July 2019.

June Record Progression: The station repeatedly broke monthly records throughout the afternoon, hitting 40.0 °C at 2:20 PM, climbing to 41.1 °C, and ultimately peaking at 41.3 °C.

Official records often require quality control and homogenization, so the 41.3 °C is still listed as preliminary. It will likely be verified (or adjusted) in the coming days/weeks.

Location Problems (Visual Evidence + Standards)

The satellite image shows the weather station (red pin) placed directly adjacent to the large rectangular treatment basins of the Kläranlage. The ground photo confirms it’s on open ground but within the industrial footprint of the plant — surrounded by concrete, water surfaces, pipes, and processing infrastructure.

WMO / standard guidelines strongly discourage this:

  • Keep stations >100 m from large water bodies or industrial heat/moisture sources.
  • Avoid altered surfaces (concrete, basins) that create local microclimates.
  • Temperature/humidity sensors should represent broader air masses, not localized industrial effects.

Wastewater plants involve:

  • Evaporative cooling/heating from open basins.
  • Waste heat from pumps, aeration, and biological activity.
  • Dark surfaces and concrete that absorb and re-radiate heat.

On a hot, sunny day with light winds, this setup can easily produce a local warm bias of several degrees compared to a proper grassy field site a few hundred meters away.

Plausible Explanations for the Spike

Real regional heat — Saarland was genuinely very hot; other stations also reported extreme values.

Amplified by siting — The plant environment likely added a local boost (extra radiation, reduced cooling, humidity effects on sensors).

Urban/industrial heat island — Burbach isn’t fully rural; combined with the plant, it’s a compounded effect.

Skeptically: A station in a more ideal location (e.g., airport grass field or open farmland a km or two away) would almost certainly have recorded noticeably lower — quite possibly not breaking the national record.

The main official nearby DWD station is Saarbrücken-Ensheim (the airport, ~10–12 km southeast of Burbach). It is at higher elevation (~320 m vs. Burbach’s ~190 m) and in a more open, grassy/airfield environment — much better siting than the treatment plant.

Burbach (Kläranlage):

Preliminary 41.3 °C (peak around 17:00) — the reported national record.

Ensheim Airport:

Reports and forecasts indicate highs in the 38–40 °C range, with some sources showing ~38–39 °C during the afternoon peak. It did not reach the extreme 41+ °C seen at Burbach.

Difference:

Burbach ran 2–3+ °C warmer than the airport station at peak times. This is a significant gap for stations this close.

Why the Gap?

Elevation:

Ensheim is higher, which typically cools it by ~1–2 °C (lapse rate effect).

Siting quality:

The airport follows much better standards (open grass/tarmac but standardized, away from industrial water basins). Burbach’s location next to large dark treatment basins adds localized heating and reduced nighttime cooling.

Microclimate:

Airports can have some warm bias from runways, but treatment plants with open water/process heat are worse for daytime highs in these conditions.

Other nearby stations (e.g., in the greater Saarbrücken area or across the border) generally topped out in the high 30s to low 40s, with Burbach consistently among the absolute hottest. This pattern repeats during heatwaves: the plant station often leads the region.

The 41.3 °C is likely inflated relative to a representative regional value. A 2–3 °C difference from the airport (a standard reference) strongly supports the criticism of the Burbach site. If the record holds officially, it should carry a clear note about exposure.

Bottom Line

This reading is not trustworthy as a clean representation of “Germany’s hottest temperature.” It’s a valid measurement at that exact spot, but the spot itself is poorly chosen for a reference climate station. It’s more like measuring temperature next to a heated swimming pool on a hot day and claiming it’s representative of the whole neighborhood.

This is a classic case of bad metadata undermining extreme records.

Climate records rely on consistent, well-sited stations over decades — when siting is compromised, it introduces noise (often warm bias in hot conditions).

If DWD confirms it without adjustment, it will still stand officially — but with an asterisk in the minds of anyone who looks at the photos and layout. Comparable debates happen globally with poorly exposed stations.
