A sixth former says young people have a \u201cresponsibility as the new generation\u201d and a \u201cchance to make a real difference\u201d when it comes to climate change.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Jed from Royal Wootton Bassett Academy was one of many students from two Wiltshire schools to share his thoughts at the Sustain Britain Schools Conference 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Anna, a student at Malmesbury school said it is a \u201cvery big worry\u201d and \u201cquite frustrating because it just feels like not enough action is being taken\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference was started by Sustain Britain after it realised last year it did not have anybody under 35 attending their usual event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jed added: \u201cIn the future we are the people that uphold the environment and we may have picked up some bad habits from the people that we\u2019ve got it from\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malmesbury School geography teacher Sarah Blackburn explained that she would be taking some of what was said in the conference back to her lessons, which already include climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Britain has \u201calmost no gas in storage in the UK<\/a> for the coming winter\u201d, the boss of British Gas\u2019s owner has said as the UK risks facing a fuel shortage this winter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chief executive of Centrica, Chris O\u2019Shea,<\/a> said \u201ctime is rapidly running out\u201d as winter approaches, in what he called a \u201chuge concern\u201d for energy and national security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes as households across Britain already face skyrocketing bills, as the impact of Donald Trump\u2019s war on Iran continues to hit energy prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuadrilla is to plug and abandon two shale gas wells in Lancashire following orders from the government\u2019s industry regulator, it confirmed in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuadrilla\u2019s parent company AJ Lucas said the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) had ordered it to permanently seal the two shale gas wells drilled at the Preston New Road (PNR) Lancashire<\/strong><\/a> shale exploration site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuadrilla claims shale gas from the North of England has the potential to meet the UK\u2019s energy needs and alleviate the cost of living crisis, as well as create jobs and aid levelling up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysts and green campaigners say because gas is globally traded, meaning it is sold to the highest bidder, it is unlikely to help the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuadrilla\u2019s chief executive officer, Francis Egan, said he thought the decision had not \u201cbeen properly thought through\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLeaving our own shale gas in the ground will make reducing global emissions even harder,\u201d he said. \u201cEmissions from importing gas are far higher than those from home-produced shale gas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
