The Climate Cares Centre \u2013 the world\u2019s first research hub dedicated to climate change and mental health \u2013 warns that the climate crisis is affecting the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/climate-cares\/\">mental wellbeing<\/a>&nbsp;of hundreds of millions of people around the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to 2024 survey by the independent research tracker&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climatebarometer.org\/topic\/emotion\/\">Climate Barometer<\/a>, worry (43%) and sadness (20%) are the most frequently felt emotions linked to climate change by the British public.&nbsp;<strong>Many people also stated: \u201cI feel no emotion about climate change.\u201d In a world full of competing crises, feelings linked to the climate crisis can be hard to put into words.<\/strong><br><br>Herein lies the problem: some of these feelings are so profoundly new or still emerging that we do not possess the language to articulate them. And if we can\u2019t name a feeling, how are we supposed to process it?<br><a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/747714\/original\/file-20260714-57-lmm5yz.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.1&amp;rect=0%2C265%2C5091%2C2863&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\"><\/a><br><br>\u2026Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-storytelling-can-help-articulate-emotions-that-evolve-as-the-climate-changes-271006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-storytelling-can-help-articulate-emotions-that-evolve-as-the-climate-changes-271006<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s an interpretation you might not have considered Bernadette. When people ticked the box on the survey saying \u201cI feel no emotion about climate change\u201d, maybe they were trying to tell you they just don\u2019t care, that climate change is a none issue for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps if the survey had included a box saying, \u201cI don\u2019t think climate change is important\u201d, that box would have received the ticks which went into the don\u2019t care box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The climate barometer website Bernadette cited admitted some people might not care about climate change the way she does;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet emotions also have the power to disconnect people from thinking or caring about climate change. For those who are disillusioned with or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climateoutreach.org\/britain-talks-climate\/seven-segments\/disengaged-traditionalists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disengaged from<\/a>&nbsp;the climate conversation, their strongest emotions may be reserved for their rejection of climate policies or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0959378023001048\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmentalism in general (sometimes called \u2018contrarian\u2019 anger)<\/a>. For some people, climate change&nbsp;<em>doesn\u2019t<\/em>&nbsp;provoke many emotions at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climatebarometer.org\/topic\/emotion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/climatebarometer.org\/topic\/emotion\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My interpretation of \u201cdon\u2019t care\u201d is supported by surveys which ask people to rate climate change compared to other issues, at least when they dared run such surveys.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2023\/07\/28\/climate-change-weekly-478-backlash-polls-confirm-climate-change-is-low-priority-issue\/\">Climate change consistently comes dead last on issue comparison surveys<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For large numbers of people in Britain today, especially in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-merseyside-67935343\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">train-wreck economy former industrial regions like Liverpool<\/a>, finding enough cash to make it to the end of the week without getting kicked out of the rental or going hungry is a far greater priority than whether your grandkids enjoy more beach weather. While I\u2019m not dissing efforts to redevelop Liverpool and improve people\u2019s lives,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-merseyside-67935343\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liverpool\u2019s shamefully low life expectancy<\/a>&nbsp;and relatively high unemployment rate shows many people have yet to experience the benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I visited Liverpool once, a long time ago, to see someone I knew. The countryside around Liverpool is beautiful, mile after mile of rolling hills and mostly well maintained houses built decades or centuries ago. But my lasting impression of Liverpool city was miles of rusting dockside factories, boarded shopfronts and some scary looking people on street corners. I hope some of that redevelopment cash is reaching the people who need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate concern is a luxury cause for bored rich people who know where their next meal is coming from.
