This creates strong temperature inversions where the lowest air layers plummet. Such extremes below -80\u00b0C are not unheard of at inland high-elevation sites but are always noteworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current readings (late July) are still extremely cold but have warmed somewhat from the mid-month low (typically around<strong> -50\u00b0C to -60\u00b0C<\/strong> range in recent observations).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Broader Context<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a <strong>classic winter extreme<\/strong> in Antarctica&#8217;s interior \u2014 driven by geography and seasonal darkness.
