Weak solar activity allows more cosmic radiation to reach Earth, which can promote cloud formation and contribute to cooling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mayer presents historical climate periods that are directly linked to reconstructions of solar activity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Roman Warm Period (~250 BCE \u2013 400 CE): <\/strong>High solar activity and mild temperatures (1\u20132 \u00b0C above pre-industrial levels).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Migration Period &amp; Early Middle Ages (~400\u2013750 CE):<\/strong> Drops in solar activity (Grand Solar Minima), cold spells, crop failures, and plagues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medieval Warm Period (~900\u20131300 CE):<\/strong> Stable, high solar activity resulting in warming, thriving agriculture, and ice-free Alpine passes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Little Ice Age (~1300\u20131850 CE):<\/strong> Troughs in solar activity (Sp\u00f6rer, Maunder, and Dalton Minima) led to global cold snaps and advancing glaciers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Modern Warming (from 1850 onwards):<\/strong> The warming over the last 170 years is interpreted primarily as a natural recovery from the cold peak of the Little Ice Age.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mayer concludes that the sun is the dominant external driver of Earth\u2019s climate.
