primary \u2014 the results of which are yet to be completely determined \u2014 voters in the nearby city of Monterey Park had the chance to consider the fate of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/legalinsurrection.com\/2026\/06\/where-ai-is-the-tool-humans-are-the-variable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial intelligence (AI) data centers<\/a>&nbsp;in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5909486-los-angeles-voters-data-center-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chose to ban them<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 86 percent of voters in Monterey Park, Calif., voted in favor of the measure in Tuesday\u2019s elections, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/results.lavote.gov\/#year=2026&amp;election=4338\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">election results<\/a>&nbsp;from the county clerk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure declares a prohibition on data centers citywide in order to \u201cprotect air quality, drinking water resources and public health\u201d and \u201cprevent impacts to electricity and water rates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes in response to a proposed data center project in Monterey Park, which was ultimately withdrawn earlier this year after the city council&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montereypark.ca.gov\/1710\/Data-Center-Information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adopted a moratorium<\/a>&nbsp;on data center construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data center moratoriums and restrictions have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5843665-data-center-backlash-grows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gained traction<\/a>&nbsp;across the country at the state and local level in the face of rising community pushback to the sprawling server warehouses that are central&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5892110-openai-spacex-anthropic-stock-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to the AI boom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the wake of backlash to a data center being in built in Utah, businessman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/legalinsurrection.com\/2025\/06\/canada-capitulates-will-scrap-digital-services-tax-restart-trade-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin O\u2019Leary<\/a>&nbsp;has agreed to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksl.com\/article\/51506884\/kevin-oleary-agrees-to-cut-box-elder-county-data-center-project-area-in-half\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cut the project area in half<\/a>, from around 40,000 acres to around 20,000 acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the remaining 20,000 acres or so of the project area, around half would remain undeveloped and set aside as agricultural space or for wildlife, reducing the effective area facing development to 10,000 acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a letter Thursday to Utah Senate President Stuart Adams, O\u2019Leary said he\u2019d remove two of the three proposed project areas from the data center initiative, one measuring around 19,430 acres in the Locomotive Springs area, another measuring around 620 acres abutting I-84. In that time, the city would study regulations that might allow large-scale data centers under certain conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were 30 public commenters at Wednesday\u2019s meeting, the overwhelming majority who expressed concern about data centers\u2019 electricity and water use, financial and environmental impacts, land use and noise. Several also voiced broader opposition to artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Committee Chair Eddie Lin, who co-sponsored the moratorium bill, said he was concerned panel urged in a new letter to the Trump administration to step up oversight of possible ties between China and anti-AI forces in the U.S., fretting that the international subterfuge could undermine
