Opposition figures like Kemi Badenoch and even US President Donald Trump have urged more exploration (\u201cdrill, baby, drill\u201d), while the Labour government shows mixed signals\u2014Chancellor Rachel Reeves has expressed openness to projects like Rosebank and Jackdaw, but broader policy emphasizes renewables. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stifel argues the current windfall tax (Energy Profits Levy) is too punitive, accelerating decline and risking higher future import dependence (potentially 85%+ of gas by 2030 without reform). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They claim tax tweaks could stabilise production, create more high-margin barrels, and even boost net tax receipts by \u00a31\u20132bn\/year through increased activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">_____________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>North Sea gas \u2018saves Britain billions a year\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Analysis comparing British resources with cost of imports will pile pressure on Ed Miliband to reverse drilling ban<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">North Sea natural gas has been found to have saved Britain billions last year, increasing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2026\/04\/04\/miliband-labour-revolt-north-sea-drilling\/\">pressure on the Government to boost production<\/a>\u00a0during the Iran war. <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2026\/04\/07\/cheap-north-sea-gas-saves-britain-billions-of-pounds-a-year\/\">The Telegraph<\/a> has the story.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tapping into its own resources of offshore gas instead of paying for imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments saved the UK about \u00a32.5bn last year, according to analysis from investment bank Stifel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bank said savings on UK-produced gas would be \u201csubstantially higher\u201d this year because prices have surged during the Middle East conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gas prices have soared by 56pc since the start of the war as the threat of strikes has deterred tankers from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, where a fifth of global exports usually pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2026\/03\/19\/the-attack-on-qatars-gas-citadel-has-blown-up-uk-energy-sec\/\">missile damage at Qatar\u2019s Ras Laffan plant<\/a>, which produces a fifth of the world\u2019s LNG, is expected to take three to five years to repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stifel\u2019s analysis will pile further pressure on Ed Miliband, who has banned new exploration in British waters and has so far rejected calls to extract more fossil fuels from the North Sea because of his net zero push.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Energy Secretary has claimed that awarding new licences for North Sea drilling would do little to lower prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Chris Wheaton, an analyst at Stifel, said it was astonishing that ministers were not ramping up production of North Sea gas, asking: \u201cDoesn\u2019t the Government realise there\u2019s a war on?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnsurprisingly \u2013 and we are frankly astonished that this has to be stated \u2013 the UK\u2019s own North Sea gas is cheaper than imported LNG, and we estimate this saved the UK \u00a32.5bn in 2025 alone,\u201d he said. \u201cWith the increase in global LNG prices due to the Persian Gulf conflict, we expect that amount will be substantially higher in 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The North Sea is still the UK\u2019s biggest gas source, accounting for around 45pc of its supplies.
