attribution studies are based on flawed logic and generate misleading headlines, according to a new briefing paper from The Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thegwpf.org\/content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Contorted-Science-The-Flawed-Logic-of-Extreme-Event-Attribution.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Contorted Science: The Flawed Logic of\u00a0Extreme\u00a0Event Attribution<\/a>, Dr. Ralph B. Alexander argues that\u00a0<strong>studies\u00a0attempting\u00a0to link specific heatwaves, hurricanes and floods to human-caused climate change<\/strong>\u00a0are fundamentally\u00a0<strong>misleading\u00a0<\/strong>and have been<strong>\u00a0created for legal and political,<\/strong>\u00a0rather than scientific\u00a0<strong>reasons<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The paper scrutinises recent\u00a0<strong>high-profile studies by World Weather Attribution and the Grantham Institute<\/strong>.\u00a0In 2025\u00a0alone, World Weather Attribution\u00a0<strong>claimed that 24\u00a0of 29\u00a0extreme events<\/strong>\u00a0examined were\u00a0<strong>made more severe or more likely by climate change.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Alexander\u00a0shows how\u00a0such conclusions\u00a0<strong>depend heavily on climate models<\/strong>\u00a0that struggle to reproduce historical climate patterns and assume scientists can accurately\u00a0<strong>simulate a \u201cnatural\u201d climate without human emissions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Some<strong>\u00a0key recurring weaknesses<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0identified\u00a0within attribution studies:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>Flawed logic:<\/strong>\u00a0attribution claims involve \u201cbegging the question\u201d,\u00a0the act of simply assuming the conclusion you are trying to investigate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>Statistical practices<\/strong>\u00a0that\u00a0<strong>inflate<\/strong>\u00a0headline\u00a0<strong>probability<\/strong>\u00a0claims while\u00a0<strong>downplaying uncertainty.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>The neglect of historical records<\/strong>\u00a0showing comparable extreme events long before modern emissions levels.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The report traces the growth of rapid event attribution to<strong>\u00a0political frustration with<\/strong>\u00a0the cautious conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<strong>\u00a0(IPCC), which has expressed low confidence<\/strong>\u00a0in long-term global trends for most types of extreme weather. It recognises the role of a 2012 meeting convened by the\u00a0<strong>Union of Concerned Scientists<\/strong>. The meeting was aimed at strengthening the perceived link between extreme weather and climate change in order to pursue litigation against fossil fuel companies.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The report\u2019s author,<strong>\u00a0Ralph Alexander<\/strong>,\u00a0said:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExtreme event attribution studies are a blot on science, the hallmarks of which are empirical evidence and logic. Rounding numbers used in calculating probabilities of a particular extreme event happening, instead of retaining decimal points, can lead to inflated and misleading probabilities.<\/em><br><em>\u2666\u00a0 The\u00a0<strong>second<\/strong>\u00a0trick, which Pielke calls<strong>\u00a0\u2018begging the question\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0(a logical fallacy), simply assumes<\/em><br><em>the conclusion that the study seeks to prove. For example, assuming that every storm is made stronger due to warmer oceans makes it child\u2019s play to conclude that the storm which just happened was made more likely due to climate change.<\/em><br><em>\u2666\u00a0 The\u00a0<strong>third<\/strong>\u00a0trick,<strong>\u00a0\u2018ignoring evidence,\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0means just that. The following sections will reveal numerous<\/em><br><em>examples.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The paper goes on to deconstruct several studies including these stated:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike every other branch of climate science or science in general,\u00a0<strong>event attribution<\/strong><br><strong>was actually originally suggested with the courts in mind.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Apart from WWA, the<strong>\u00a0US National Academies<\/strong>\u00a0have recently established a committee to \u2018examine<\/em><br><em>current scientific understanding of attribution of extreme weather events and their impacts on climate change, and\u00a0<strong>consider user needs and opportunities to improve attribution science capabilities.\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0Nonetheless, the committee intends to focus on the dubious science behind extreme event attribution, and not any legal ramifications.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>It remains to be seen whether<strong>\u00a0multiple court cases against fossil fuel companies, based on extreme event attribution,<\/strong>\u00a0will succeed. Nevertheless, there is already a\u00a0<strong>burgeoning industry of legal activists<\/strong>\u00a0with a vested interest in exploiting so-called attribution science. By September 2024, it was estimated that 50 lawsuits had been filed by US states, counties and local governments, and about half that number in Europe and other countries.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Extreme event attribution studies are deeply flawed, with fundamental logical and methodological errors \u2013 the result of such studies being created for legal and political, not scientific, reasons.
