It\u2019s also created internal conflicts within the \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d movement because the President and HHS Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., are asking MAHA to defend a chemical that it had previously battled as carcinogenic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glyphosate herbicides are extensively used with corn, soybean, and cotton crops \u2014 and less so with sugar beets, alfalfa, wheat, oats, barley, canola, and some fruits and vegetables \u2014 utilizing \u201cRoundup Ready\u201d crop variants that are immune to the highly efficient herbicide. Up to 90% of soybean and corn acreage is treated to manage weeds, thereby increasing crop yields remarkably in recent decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, there is only one domestic phosphorus producer, and herbicide manufacturers rely heavily on imports. That has become a major national security concern due to the dominance some countries have exerted over many metals, minerals and products \u2014 and often contentious global politics that can lead to threatened or actual import restrictions or bans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glyphosate has become\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jpands.org\/vol25no3\/driessen.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>controversial mostly because of<\/u><\/a>\u00a0longstanding activist opposition, advertisements seeking \u201ccancer victims\u201d who \u201cmay have been exposed\u201d to the chemical, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2025\/09\/23\/judicial-limits-on-glyphosate-and-climate-jackpot-justice-litigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>class-action lawsuits<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that employ highly questionable (verging on fraudulent) \u201cscience\u201d to impugn the chemical and persuade sympathetic but scientifically uninformed juries to deliver billion-dollar \u201cjackpot justice\u201d verdicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chemical has been used for more than 50 years. It is licensed in 130 countries and was utilized by millions of homeowners and gardeners to control weeds. Tens of thousands of farmers still utilize it. Studies and reviews by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, European Food Safety Authority, UN Food and Agriculture Organization, Health Canada, and dozens of other experts have determined it is\u00a0<em>safe and non-carcinogenic<\/em>\u00a0at exposure levels found in foods or used according to normal safeguards. It is less acutely toxic than aspirin, table salt, or acetic acid. (Citations at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jpands.org\/vol25no3\/driessen.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>AAPS Journal<\/u><\/a>, page 84)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. \u201cAgricultural Health Study\u201d has followed 52,000 pesticide applicators (mostly farmers) and 32,000 of their spouses for three decades. More than 80% of them use or have used glyphosate. The study has found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aghealth.nih.gov\/news\/AHSUpdate2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>no glyphosate-cancer link<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only one agency, the France-based International Agency for Research on Cancer, says otherwise. Over the years, IARC has determined that more than 550 chemicals, products, occupations, and biological and physical agents are carcinogens \u2014 based on other researchers\u2019 work. IARC does no research of its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, it ruled that glyphosate is \u201cprobably\u201d carcinogenic to humans \u2014 along with anabolic steroids, red meat, acetaldehyde from yeast fermentation and baking bread, emissions from high-temperature food frying, drinking \u201cvery hot\u201d beverages, working as a hairdresser, and 76 other sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IARC\u2019s \u201cpossibly carcinogenic\u201d category includes diesel fuel, pickled vegetables, carpentry work, caffeic acid in coffee, foods like apples and broccoli, and over 300 other items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, the pathway by which glyphosate attacks plants \u2014 preventing them from synthesizing essential amino acids \u2014 is totally absent in animals and humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still more problematic, its glyphosate ruling was based heavily on\u00a0<em>two<\/em>\u00a0mice studies, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.house.gov\/meetings\/SY\/SY00\/20180206\/106828\/HHRG-115-SY00-Wstate-TaroneR-20180206.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>multiple investigators<\/u><\/a>\u00a0said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/risk-monger.com\/2017\/10\/13\/greed-lies-and-glyphosate-the-portier-papers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>manipulated data<\/u><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/investigates\/special-report\/glyphosate-cancer-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>ignored studies<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that contradicted IARC\u2019s decision, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3118802\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>employed \u201chazard\u201d tests<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that subjected laboratory animals to long-term high-exposure levels that animals and humans would almost never encounter in the real world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, some chemicals may be harmful, even carcinogenic at high doses \u2014 but harmless, beneficial, or essential at low levels. Toxicologists call this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1550413108000028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>hormesis<\/u><\/a>. 81 mg aspirin is a good example; so is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11721941\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>selenium<\/u><\/a>. Even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/water-intoxication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>drinking too much water<\/u><\/a>\u00a0can kill you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither IARC \u2014 nor any lawyer, judge, or jury \u2014 can prove that a plaintiff got cancer because of\u00a0<em>glyphosate,\u00a0<\/em>instead of from exposure to countless other \u201cdefinitely\u201d to \u201cprobably\u201d to \u201cpossibly\u201d carcinogenic chemicals, substances, occupations, and industrial processes the plaintiff likely encountered or engaged in over a lifetime.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/monographs.iarc.who.int\/agents-classified-by-the-iarc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>IARC\u2019s carcinogen lists<\/u><\/a>\u00a0underscore this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having already \u201clinked\u201d glyphosate to 20-some \u201cserious health consequences,\u201d campaigners now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cornwallalliance.org\/does-monsantos-roundup-glyphosate-cause-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>accuse the weed killer of causing<\/u><\/a>\u00a0gluten intolerance, celiac disease, fatty liver disease, autism, immune disorders, autism, obesity, Alzheimer\u2019s, depression, and more \u2014 setting the stage for new mass-tort lawsuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say these problems increased at the same time glyphosate use was rising. But the use of fluorescent lights, birth control pills, television, computers, social media, and anesthesia also increased during that time. No studies under accepted scientific standards of evidence have shown that glyphosate caused any of these problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glyphosate has joined the \u201cclimate crisis\u201d as an alleged cause of countless bad things affecting Earth and humanity. And yet, IARC and attack lawyers don\u2019t even mention another category of serious health risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/risk-monger.com\/2016\/04\/13\/the-risk-mongers-dirty-dozen-12-highly-toxic-pesticides-approved-for-use-in-organic-farming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Copper sulfate<\/u><\/a>\u00a0was widely used\u00a0<em>on organic farms<\/em>\u00a0for decades, before being somewhat restricted recently. Its oral LD50 is 450-790 \u2014 meaning just 450 milligrams per kilogram of body weight can kill half the lab animals that ingest it. Its dermal (skin contact) LD50 is lower, above 2000 mg\/kg. But the chemical is\u00a0<em>deadly<\/em>\u00a0to fish, hugely harmful to avian reproductive systems \u2026 and highly toxic to humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In glaring contrast, it takes more than 5000 mg\/kg of glyphosate, orally or dermally, to kill rats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other approved\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/risk-monger.com\/2017\/03\/23\/the-top-20-reasons-not-to-feed-your-family-organic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>organic farm<\/u><\/a>\u00a0favorites, like rotenone and pyrethrins, also have problematical LD50 levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No chemical (or activity) is totally safe. But glyphosate is far safer (and far more effective) than almost any other herbicides: past (arsenic!), present, or organic. If it is banned, the impacts will be far-reaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weed control chemicals eliminate the need to till cropland. That protects soil organisms, conserves soil moisture, reduces irrigation and erosion, sequesters CO2, saves time and tractor fuel, and allows more land to be conserved as wildlife habitat, instead of being planted in crops. Most obviously, they eradicate weeds that steal water and nutrients from food crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eliminate herbicides, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cornwallalliance.org\/glyphosate-agricultural-productivity-and-food-security-a-risk-based-policy-assessment-in-the-context-of-modern-food-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>these benefits decline or disappear<\/u><\/a>. Weeds will have to be controlled by regular tractor tilling or human hands \u2014 or by more expensive, less effective, more dangerous chemicals. Far more land will have to be cultivated to get the same crop production \u2014 on top of what has already been removed from agriculture or degraded in productivity by industrial wind and solar installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Farming costs will skyrocket. Crop yields will decline dramatically. Food prices will soar. Food aid for malnourished people around the globe will shrivel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are dealing with the \u201cprecautionary principle\u201d on steroids. Focused on alleged, highly speculative risks of\u00a0<em>using<\/em>\u00a0chemicals \u2014 never on the risks of\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0using them. Highlighting risks a technology allegedly might\u00a0<em>cause<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 but ignoring often far greater risks it would\u00a0<em>reduce or prevent<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demonizing, prohibiting, suing, and regulating vital chemicals out of existence is a surefire way to slash U.S. and global living standards and nutrition. It\u2019s time to rein in the activists and jackpot-justice lawyers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Trump recently signed an executive order invoking the Defense
