class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have long been meaning to address the myth that renewables provide the cheapest electricity. This myth has achieved \u201ceverybody knows that\u201d status which means that a rebuttal must have strong supporting arguments.\u00a0 \u00a0A series of articles at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceofdoom.substack.com\/\">Science of Doom<\/a>\u00a0blog by Steve Carson explains why this myth is not true.\u00a0 He sums it up: \u201cWe built a lot of cheap intermittent energy, and now the expensive part is making the system work when that energy isn\u2019t there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carson explains w<strong>hy cheap renewables don\u2019t automatically produce cheap electricity in a\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/scienceofdoom.substack.com\/p\/renewables-from-china-to-south-australia\">reading guide<\/a><strong>\u00a0to his recent renewables posts. \u00a0Fellow traveler Francis Menton and I have long argued that before continuing with New York\u2019s renewable energy madness that a test jurisdiction should implement the transition mandates so we can see what happens.\u00a0 Carson wrote 14 posts \u201c<\/strong>starting with a broader look (including China and Europe), then drilling into South Australia as the most useful real-world laboratory for high renewables\u201d that examines the reality of other jurisdictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recommend the entire series.\u00a0 Carson suggests that if you\u2019re new to this series, the best way to read it is in time order. Who pays, how the cost shows up in bills, why LGC values collapsed (because the scheme worked), and what newer mechanisms are trying to do instead.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two newer mechanisms. \u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcceew.gov.au\/energy\/renewable\/capacity-investment-scheme\">Capacity Investment Scheme<\/a>\u00a0is a federal program that underwrites new renewable and clean dispatchable capacity, run through competitive tenders in the NEM regions.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.numberanalytics.com\/blog\/renewable-energy-guarantees-of-origin\">Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin<\/a>\u00a0(often shortened to REGO) are tradable certificates that verify that a given quantity of electricity was generated from renewable sources.\u00a0 I think but cannot prove that most markets have similar mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/058ac02a-a2c0-4ed6-a99e-b4405cc926fe?j=eyJ1IjoiaHBvNTIifQ.BK0mtvfAndl_BEabCxeAPWEobz0fFterzlS_5Q3pAQw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Solar Lunch Break That Coal Can\u2019t Take (and Gas Only Sort of Can)<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is another example of the hidden complexities of the electric system that insiders understand but renewable spruiker spiels ignore.\u00a0 It is a more technical post that explains \u201cwhy thermal plants can\u2019t simply shut down at 8am and restart at 4pm without cost and risk.\u201d This is the \u201cphysical side of the negative-price story \u2014 ramps, starts, cycling, and why batteries are a useful bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While preparing this summary a few quotes from the articles caught my eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Results from Germany, England, and France show that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>System Costs Overwhelm Commodity Savings: While the \u201cWholesale\u201d cost of a windy day might be low, the cost of managing that variability (the Blue Layer) and the \u201clegacy\u201d subsidies of the past (the Red Layer) are driving the total price upward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decarbonization via Imports: Both the UK and Germany have \u201cdecarbonized\u201d partly by importing French nuclear and Norwegian hydro.
