Alarm bells are ringing loudly now but is anyone listening?<br><br>While the solar and wind industry has seen our concerns largely fall on deaf ears within government and at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/aeso\/\">Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO)<\/a>, this should be a major wake up call for ALL Albertans that want to see investment of ANY kind in this province. Material, punitive and retroactive \u2013 Alberta is writing the book on how to kill investment: \u201cprovincially legislated changes \u2026 have materially and retroactively altered the economic conditions under which these renewable assets were developed and financed,\u201d the ATCO company\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/atco%20blames%20alberta%20power%20policies%20as%20it%20devalues%20wind%20and%20solar%20projects%20by%20$408m\/\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The back story is provided by Jason Markusoff, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/atco-blames-alberta-power-policies-as-it-devalues-wind-and-solar-projects-by-408m-9.7128473\">ATCO Blames Alberta Power Policies as it Devalues Wind and Solar Projects by $408M<\/a>.\u201d (CBC News: March 14, 2026)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On Oct. 5, 2022, ATCO announced a $730-million acquisition of renewable projects in Ontario and Alberta, including the 202-megawatt Forty Mile wind farm in southeast Alberta. It was a major foray by a massive Alberta conglomerate into the province\u2019s then-burgeoning wind and solar power market\u2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>[Now] One of Alberta\u2019s biggest and most venerable companies is declaring a $408-million hit to the value of its wind and solar projects in the province\u2026. ATCO Ltd.\u2019s power subsidiary Canadian Utilities reported the devaluation of its roughly $1 billion in Alberta renewable energy assets in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianutilities.com\/content\/dam\/cu-web\/en-ca\/assets\/investors\/cu-2025-ye-mda.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>recent financial disclosure<\/u><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It says that policy changes to the transmission network have forced the company to heavily curtail the output of its major wind turbine project in southeast Alberta \u2014 and adds that a looming overhaul of transmission rules stands to harm that and other renewable projects even more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The [Danielle] Smith government [United Conservative Party] has prided itself on creating an investor-friendly climate in Alberta, and slashing regulation that it derides as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakelandtoday.ca\/beyond-local\/minister-celebrates-albertas-fourth-consecutive-a-in-red-tape-reduction-11888469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>red tape.<\/u><\/a>\u201d But it has faced repeated criticism from the renewable sector for doing the opposite\u2026. Premier Danielle Smith and her government have criticized them as intermittent and less reliable than other generation types like natural gas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canadian Utilities\u2019 report signals that the province\u2019s electricity policies are not only impairing the renewable sector\u2019s potential growth, but also projects already built in Alberta\u2026. Earlier this week, Pembina\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/business\/2026\/03\/10\/undoing-renewables-obstacles-should-be-part-of-energy-mou-talks-pembina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued a report<\/a>\u00a0on the beleaguered state of Alberta\u2019s wind and solar sector. It noted a 93 per cent drop in newly installed wind, solar and storage capacity between 2022 and 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A skeptic when it comes to the\u00a0merits of\u00a0renewable power, her government has imposed a range of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/alberta-new-rules-renewable-energy-wind-solar-1.7404024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>new limits<\/u><\/a>\u00a0to renewable project development, including a seven-month moratorium on new approvals in 2023. Reforms to the broader electrical system, made in the name of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/alberta-s-government-wants-reliable-electrical-system-proposes-market-changes-to-get-there-1.7408089\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>reliability<\/u><\/a>\u00a0have been widely criticized by companies and groups involved in wind and solar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The lack of new power transmission lines from the wind- and solar-heavy southeast part of Alberta has forced the system regulators to curtail some companies\u2019 generation. The ATCO company\u2019s Forty Mile project has been one of the hardest hit. They are completely unreliable: no wind means no electricity, and no sun (which is guaranteed every single night) means no electricity either.
