But on the North Sea, it is no longer just the American president who is at odds with the Energy Secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the war in the Middle East convulses global oil and gas markets, Labour\u2019s crackdown on home-grown production is facing mounting opposition from all sides \u2013 including from people once sympathetic to Miliband\u2019s net zero cause. <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2026\/03\/22\/milibands-north-sea-crackdown-seems-more-senseless\/\">The Telegraph<\/a> has the story.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Government\u2019s ban on new drilling licences and its swingeing windfall tax have been blamed for crippling the UK\u2019s domestic industry while also reducing tax revenues and pushing up carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a self-inflicted blow that is now prompting opposition from surprising directions \u2013 leaving Miliband looking increasingly isolated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those advocating a \u201cdrill, baby, drill\u201d approach are not just Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, and Nigel Farage, the Reform leader, but also Sir Tony Blair, the former Labour prime minister \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2026\/02\/13\/tony-blair-ed-miliband-to-unlock-165bn-of-north-sea-oil\/\">who has described the current position as \u201cclimate theatre\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the energy industry, there are also calls for a more \u201cpragmatic\u201d approach from people who would normally be Miliband\u2019s allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent weeks, even green energy evangelists \u2013 such as the bosses of Octopus Energy and wind farm trade body RenewableUK \u2013 have backed greater North Sea production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt puts Ed in a very tight spot,\u201d says one energy industry executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Energy Secretary insists that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/money\/property\/buying-selling\/ed-miliband-net-zero-folly-choked-aberdeen-property-market\/\">boosting domestic production is pointless<\/a>&nbsp;because it cannot make a \u201cmaterial difference\u201d and won\u2019t bring down household energy bills. \u201cOur reliance on fossil fuels is costing us,\u201d he said in a recent interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has attacked Britain\u2019s strategy, saying the UK is making a \u201cbig mistake\u201d by turning its back on the North Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet at the heart of the debate are also questions about energy security, tax revenues, jobs and carbon emissions, issues that experts say have been relegated in the name of dogma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the outbreak of war in Iran plunged global energy supplies into chaos and with Britons facing up to the prospect of soaring household bills, Miliband\u2019s personal crusade seems more destructive than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite Miliband\u2019s pledge to get Britain off the fossil fuel \u201crollercoaster\u201d, oil and gas are set to remain a fixture of the country\u2019s energy supplies for decades to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 75pc of the UK\u2019s primary energy still comes from oil and gas (70 million tonnes of crude oil and 65 billion cubic metres of gas) and this will take time to undo, with most of the existing demand stemming from transport and gas heating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even if the UK gets close to net zero by 2035, it will still consume nearly 40 million tonnes of oil and 30 billion cubic metres of gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet one key difference will be where it comes from.
