Westfield in Fife also burns chicken litter, while Ely burns straw, while Glanford burns meat and bone meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fife Today also report on the Westfield story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jobs at a biomass centre in Fife could be on the line unless the company\u2019s owners can find new financial support.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Melton Renewable Energy operates five biomass power stations across the UK including its site at&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifetoday.co.uk\/topic\/westfield\"><em>Westfield<\/em><\/a><em>, Cardenden \u2013 but they could all close when the Government\u2019s Renewables Obligation (RO) ends in March 2027.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The company aid that unless it can secure some transitional support after that expiry date, it will begin a three-month consultation leading to the closure of all sites and the loss of 200 jobs with 25 of them at the&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifetoday.co.uk\/news\/opinion\/columnists\/eight-key-lessons-for-kirkcaldy-as-town-tries-to-re-invent-itself-5624805\"><em>Fife<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;plant.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Westfield, which is based on the site of one of the UK\u2019s largest open cast coal mines, safely processes around 90% of all poultry litter in Scotland, preventing it from being spread to land and helping the poultry sector keep down its cost of production.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifetoday.co.uk\/business\/westfield-jobs-at-risk-and-threat-of-biomass-closure-as-company-opens-talks-with-staff-6012360\">Westfield: jobs at risk and threat of biomass&nbsp;closure as company opens talks with staff<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What has humanity been doing with all of that chicken litter since we started having boiled eggs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Grok:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Poultry litter is nutrient-rich (high in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) and is widely used as an organic fertilizer on cropland, pastures, hay fields, or gardens. Farmers or contractors remove (&#8220;clean out&#8221;) the litter from houses and spread it on fields according to nutrient management plans or soil tests to match crop needs and prevent over-application (especially phosphorus buildup).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>It improves soil health by adding organic matter.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Melton made \u00a380 million from ROC subsidies, in addition to another \u00a312 million from Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin and top ups from OGFEM from ROC recycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Total turnover was \u00a3169 million, so more than half of revenue comes from subsidies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little wonder they don\u2019t want to give them up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"723\" height=\"217\" data-attachment-id=\"432494\"
