href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/news\/topic\/climate-change\">Climate and Environment<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disruption of global energy supplies is being felt worldwide, the UN\u2019s top climate change official warned on Monday, as conflict in the Middle East drives oil and gas prices sharply higher \u2013 echoing the market turmoil triggered by the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking at the 2026 Green Growth Summit in Brussels,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/about-us\/the-executive-secretary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simon Stiell<\/a>, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNFCCC<\/a>), said the volatility underscored the strategic value of renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>Renewables turn the tables<\/strong>,\u201d he said during a keynote address to the event, which brings together European climate and environment ministers alongside businesses, investors and other key stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>Sunlight doesn\u2019t depend on narrow and vulnerable shipping straits, wind blows without massive taxpayer-funded naval escorts<\/strong>&nbsp;[and] renewable energy allows countries to insulate themselves from global turmoil and to side-step might-is-right politics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, renewable energy also delivers on people\u2019s top priorities across the continent: security, well-paid jobs, better health and relief from rising living costs, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pointing out that in 2025, renewables overtook coal as the world\u2019s top electricity source, and over $2 trillion was invested in clean energy \u2013 double that of fossil fuels \u2013 he said \u201cthe opportunities are immense.\u201d<br><br>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEurope can permanently seize the multi-trillion-euro goldmine of investment that\u2019s just getting started by embracing green growth, drawing on your many strengths, [including] education, strong institutions, smart regulation, social justice and innovation and intellectual property, and by backing it up with plans and comments?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">$2 trillion spent and it hasn\u2019t even moved the needle of Europe\u2019s dependence on oil imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If $2 trillion has no impact, what would another $4 trillion achieve? The answer should be obvious \u2013 absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One day the world will run out of fossil fuel, in about 50 \u2013 200 years from now, depending on who you ask. But we already know what the world will likely do next, if there has been no major breakthrough like nuclear fusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is enough recoverable Thorium to power the planet with Thorium \/ U233 fission reactors for thousands of years.
