display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"723\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XY9M9g50spE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stop could not have gone worse for Hagel, having since become the target of&nbsp;significant public ridicule and criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gaffe: Hagel attempted to explain the greenhouse effect to a class of elementary school children \u2013 on national television \u2013 but wound up showing the audience that he fundamentally didn\u2019t have the first clue about the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/XY9M9g50spE?si=QPiFO_hkNs-wa_8N&amp;t=190\">standing at a monitor<\/a>, Hagel explained to the onlooking students that the greenhouse effect worked as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between the earth and the sun is the atmsphere. And as this gets increasingly thin, the sun gets hotter and hotter. And the reason for this is CO2 emissions and and and. And that is the greenhouse effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Confused candidate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientific critics and social media users quickly pointed out that the greenhouse effect is actually caused by gases like water vapor, CO2 and methane trapping heat within the atmosphere, and not by the atmosphere getting thinner and the sun getting hotter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the teacher seemed stunned after Hagel\u2019s expalantion, shaking her head and sarcastically saying: \u201c<em>Wunderbar. Bin beeindruckt.<\/em>\u201d (Wonderful, I\u2019m impressed.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not certain if Hagel confused the greenhouse effect with the ozone-hole and other scientific phenomena. One thing is sure: he \u2018s very confused about the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident particularly gained traction because candidate Hagel was positioned as an authority figure educating children, and the fact that he taught them incorrect information and didn\u2019t know what he was talking about is particularly embarrassing.
