This included passengers as well as drivers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>It then tracked those people\u2019s physical movements around the country and sent \u201canonymised and aggregated\u201d data to the government.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>\u2018Nanny state for motorists\u2019<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Details of the project \u2013 described as \u201ca surveillance state by stealth\u201d \u2013 were revealed this week in a DfT report. The work was conducted by the department under the previous Conservative government and ended before Labour won the 2024 general election.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full story&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2026\/02\/27\/electric-car-drivers-spied-on-by-government-through-phones\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bit of a nothing burger of a story. But what struck me was this rather silly graph:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-1.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image_thumb-1.png?w=723&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" title=\"image\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I say silly \u2013 but what I really mean is the Title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course pay per mile tax will eventually raise more than fuel duty, when nobody drives petrol\/diesels any more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what the Telegraph have totally missed is the projection that total tax take from both sources will massively decline \u2013 by about two-thirds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I pointed out when the pay-per-mile tax was introduced in the November Budget, it will soon have to be increased drastically, if tax revenues are to be maintained. The alternative will be an increase in other taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fuel duties currently bring in \u00a326 billion a year, so we are looking at an eventual shortage of about \u00a318 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only real answer is to phase in a tripling of pay-per-mile tax between now and 2030. EV owners need acquainting with real world realities. And it is easier to do that while they still drive petrol, as they will see they are no better or worse off when they go electric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, as with everything else this Labour Government does, it will simply ignore the problem and kick it down the road so somebody else gets the blame. After all, Rachel Reeves\u2019 inadequate pay-per-mile tax won\u2019t even start till 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile the Telegraph is failing its readers by failing to warn them of the tax bombshell soon to hit them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Nanny state for motorists\u2019<br \/>\nDetails of the project \u2013 described as \u201ca surveillance state by stealth\u201d \u2013 were revealed this week in a DfT report.
