\u2018Dynamic alignment\u2019 of UK law with EU rules on promotion of renewable energy will require country to decarbonise rapidly<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sir Keir Starmer has drawn up plans under which the UK will ramp up its net zero targets and cede control over its energy policy as part of\u00a0closer alignment with Brussels<\/a>. The Telegraph<\/a> has the story.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A memorandum, published by the Cabinet Office earlier this month, spells out the price that the UK is willing to pay to reset relations with Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This includes a \u201cdynamic alignment\u201d of British law with EU rules on \u201cthe promotion of renewable energy<\/a>\u201d, which could require the UK to decarbonise \u2013 not just electricity, but also heating and transport, rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In practice this could see net zero targets doubled, potentially leading to draconian measures such as reducing meat consumption and restrictions on flying<\/a>, wood fires and driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister stands accused of signing the UK up to a \u201cpoisoned chalice\u201d deal, which will limit the ability of future governments to make decisions about the country\u2019s own energy investment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a speech on Saturday, Sir Keir said Britain must align itself more closely to the EU single market<\/a> and called for \u201cdeeper economic integration\u201d with the bloc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He suggested closer economic alignment could happen as soon as this year, adding that the UK needed to go further on closer relations with the EU in other sectors, including defence. The Conservatives accused Labour of a \u201cBrexit betrayal\u201d<\/a>, saying the deal would \u201creduce growth and make Britain poorer\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
