Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory shows that the lake also reached near-100% coverage in 2025 (95.8%), 2018 (95.1%), 2015 (98.1%), 2014 (96.1%) and 2011 (95.8%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past five years especially, peak ice coverage has swung dramatically, ranging from a high of 94% this winter to just 11% in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Meteorologists attribute this year\u2019s coverage to the prolonged stretch of extreme cold and this year\u2019s record low temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">According to Alexa Maines, a meteorologist at NWS Cleveland, January held one of the longest cold stretches ever recorded, with eight consecutive days below 20 degrees Fahrenheit from Jan. 24-31. Only two years \u2014 1899 and 1961 \u2014 have experienced longer streaks, each lasting nine days.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Check out the massive crack that developed in Lake Erie\u2019s ice sheet. Crack is just under 100 miles long.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/l7d5wwTndI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/l7d5wwTndI<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 Max Claypool (@MadMaxClaypool)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MadMaxClaypool\/status\/2020916010870616357?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">February 9, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Several factors are contributing to this development, including the lake\u2019s shallowness and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-environment-watch\/ice-grips-great-lakes-with-erie-nearly-fully-covered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cLa Ni\u00f1a\u201d weather pattern<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">While recent cold snaps accelerated the freeze, Arnold said Lake Erie icing over this time of year is not unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is very shallow compared to the other lakes so that\u2019s why it does end up freezing, or at least the majority of it, over the course of the winter season,\u201d Arnold said. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t call it abnormal for what we\u2019re seeing currently, other than just it peaked a little bit earlier than the historical average.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, Lake Erie reaches peak ice coverage during mid-to-late February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The colder conditions are being driven by a mix of factors, including the return of La Ni\u00f1a, a climate pattern that can shift the jet stream and bring colder, stormier weather to the region.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lake Erie is nearing full ice coverage, something that hasn\u2019t happened since 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In modern records, the lake has only reached 100% ice coverage a few times. However, they are a bit above average for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2026\/02\/09\/michigan-great-lakes-ice-superior-ontario-erie-huron-noaa\/88587347007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ice coverage at this time of year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lake Superior\u2019s surface was 50% frozen over as of Feb. 9, about a 10 percentage point increase from Sunday, Feb. 8, and the highest percentage of ice cover for the season. The shoreline from Sault Ste Marie to Duluth, Minnesota, and north to Thunder Bay is covered in ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, Feb. 8, ice on the Great Lakes totaled 54.29%, according to the latest charts by the U.S. National Ice Center. Ice cover dipped slightly to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.glerl.noaa.gov\/coastwatch\/webdata\/statistic\/ice\/dat\/g2025_2026_ice.dat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">53.01%<\/a>&nbsp;coverage on Monday, Feb. 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lake Erie remains nearly completely frozen over \u2014 about 95% coverage. Lake St. Clair Lake, which is included in the Great Lakes ice data, located between the St. Clair River and the Detroit River systems, is completely frozen over, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glerl.noaa.gov\/data\/ice\/#currentConditions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory<\/a>, a National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lake Huron is nearly three-quarters iced over at 66.64%, down from last week when the total was 77.49%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Ice is more than 2 feet thick in many places, including along Lake Superior shorelines, Lake Huron\u2019s northern shores, the inner Saginaw Bay, parts of northern Lake Michigan, nearly all of Lake Ontario, and the western portion of Lake Erie, according to U.S. National Ice Center\u2019s thickness map.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">After weeks of bone-chilling cold and headlines about record ice, it\u2019s hard not to wonder if that \u201cNew Ice Age\u201d theory is inching a little too close for comfort.
