Rather, after around 2000\u2026both males and females of different reproductive categories increased in body condition for the following two decades.\u201d \u2014&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-025-33227-9\">Aars et al., 2026<\/a><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Thick sea ice is not a necessary condition for polar bear health and survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">As local residents regularly observe, today polar bears successfully hunt bearded seal \u201cwhen sea ice is absent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">They also routinely feed on harbour seals, walrus, and reindeer throughout the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Consequently, despite the expectation that a reduction in sea ice would harm polar bear populations, not only has the body condition (BC) of Svalbard bears improved since 2000, \u201cthe population has been increasing\u201d for the last 50 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, Svalbard polar bears \u2013 especially males \u2013 in the colder northern regions with thicker sea ice are in
