To spare plants, city environmental laws have long forbidden using salt on pedestrian paths and stairways, and so residents have been falling and injuring themselves at such high rates that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apollo-news.net\/berliner-unfallklinik-behandelt-100-gltteopfer-in-24-stunden-ein-patient-querschnittsgelhmt\/\">emergency rooms have had trouble keeping up<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Berlin\u2019s emergency rooms are working flat out due to the icy conditions. At the BG Accident Hospital in Berlin, staff are \u201cclose to the limit,\u201d press spokeswoman Angela Kijewski told&nbsp;<em>Apollo News<\/em>. On Thursday alone, there were 100 injuries due to slippery sidewalks and roads. These included bruises, broken bones and traumatic brain injuries. One patient has even suffered paraplegia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">As the press spokeswoman reported \u2026 in the last few days since the ice storm, staff have typically had to treat 50 to 70 patients a day who have been injured due to the slippery conditions. The hospital is responsible for work-related accidents and accidents on the way to work and is therefore prepared for large-scale emergencies \u2013 with the appropriate equipment and personnel. But even there, the slippery conditions are pushing them to their limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur surgeons are operating into the night,\u201d Kijewski said &#8230;. Many of the patients require immediate surgery, while in other cases, fractures must first be immobilized with a cast and allowed to heal before further treatment can be given.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Kijewski urged Berliners to \u201cattach spikes to their shoes for better grip,\u201d because everybody has a few pairs of crampons just lying around, and she also amazingly suggested that residents try \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.berlin.de\/aktuelles\/10171267-958090-unfallkrankenhaus-appelliert-an-angepass.html\">walking like penguins<\/a>\u201d to avoid slipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">For weeks, politicians have resisted relaxing their salt prohibition, despite the danger to life and limb. SPD \u201cenvironmental expert\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tagesspiegel.de\/berlin\/was-tun-gegen-die-eisglatte-wegner-fordert-einsatz-von-streusalz-auf-berlins-gehwegen-15197026.html\">Linda Vierecke, for example, pronounced herself \u201csceptical\u201d about any changes because the salt is bad for the trees<\/a>. That is why I have instructed the Senator for Transport today to issue a general ruling without delay, allowing private individuals and the VSR to use road salt on sidewalks to remove the ice cover.\u201d Wegner further emphasized that he was aware that this decision was \u201cassociated with legal uncertainties.\u201d Nevertheless, he considered it appropriate due to the \u201cspecial situation.\u201d \u201cThere is still a need for the fastest possible legal regulation to create legal certainty for the future. We will continue to discuss this in the coalition in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, Wegner could\u2019ve waived these retarded rules weeks ago before all those elderly people ended up with grievous injuries in overflowing emergency rooms.
