The Government\u2019s Warm Homes Plan, announced on Tuesday, will see millions of families able to access solar panels, batteries, heat pumps and insulation which could <\/em>reduce the amount they pay for energy<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the plans, backed with \u00a315billion of taxpayer cash, homeowners can apply for low and zero-interest loans to <\/em>install solar panels on their homes in what the Government has dubbed a \u2018rooftop revolution<\/em><\/a>\u2018.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But concerns have been raised about <\/em>fitting five million British homes with China-sourced solar panels \u2013 which have been linked with slave labour abuses against Uyghur Muslims in China\u2019s Xinjiang province<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, the Government was forced to amend legislation requiring GB Energy, Britain\u2019s state-owned energy company, to ensure slavery and human trafficking is not taking place within its <\/em>supply chain<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Ed Miliband on Wednesday refused to impose the same ban on solar panels <\/em>purchased for its Warm Homes Plan \u2013 which could see five million homes fit with the technology \u2013<\/em><\/a> under questioning in the Commons Chamber.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked to confirm that \u2018not a single aspect\u2019 of the Warm Homes Plan would rely on slave labour supply chains, the Energy Secretary replied the Government has already \u2018raised standards\u2019 in GB Energy \u2013 and blamed the Tories for the \u2018system\u2019 Labour had inherited.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of Miliband\u2019s warblings, there is no alternative but to buy solar panels from China, who make 80% of the world\u2019s output of panels and as much as 95% of some of the key components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knows that and he also knows that China will not alter its use of Uighur slave labour, just because he says so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, the requirement for GB Energy to \u201censure slavery and human trafficking is not taking place within its supply chain\u201d <\/em>will have no effect either. Yes, they might get a piece of paper from the Chinese Government, certifying this \u2013 but that\u2019s all it will be, a piece of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s bad enough having to accept human rights abuses elsewhere in the world, which we have no control over. It is simply immoral for Miliband to be spending taxpayer money on products that we don\u2019t need and that are beyond a doubt made with slave labour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
