The UK has been threatened with US sanctions if Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government proceeds with banning or severely restricting access to X (formerly Twitter).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Britain has been threatened with sanctions if Sir Keir Starmer attempts to block Elon Musk\u2019s X over its AI tool undressing women and children<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anna Paulina Luna, a US Republican congresswoman and ally of Donald Trump, warned she would bring forward legislation to \u201csanction not only Starmer, but Britain as a whole\u201d if it moved to ban the social media platform. The Telegraph<\/a> has the story.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She issued the threat after Sir Keir called for \u201call options to be on the table\u201d to force X to stop thousands of non-consensual sexualised images of women from being shared on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Users have been using the social network\u2019s AI chatbot, Grok, to digitally undress pictures of women, including ministers, MPs and celebrities, without their consent. Some images also included children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials are now considering whether these images breach the UK\u2019s Online Safety Act<\/a>, which has the power to levy billions of pounds in fines or ban apps entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the possibility of a ban has already sparked tensions with policymakers in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Luna, who serves on the House foreign affairs committee, said legislation was \u201ccurrently being drafted\u201d to introduce potential sanctions on the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said this would \u201cmirror actions previously taken by the US in response to foreign governments restricting the platform\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This included sanctioning a Brazilian judge who briefly imposed a ban on X in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US also banned Thierry Breton, the former EU markets tsar who led Europe\u2019s efforts to crack down on US technology giants, from entering America in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Luna said: \u201cThis is a political war against Elon Musk and free speech \u2013 nothing more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The controversy has already led to X seeking a potential climbdown, as it appeared to start halting thousands of attempts to create non-consensual sexualised images using Grok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to user requests to create these images, Grok said: \u201cImage generation and editing are currently limited to paying subscribers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Downing Street said the latest changes did not go far enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Minister\u2019s spokesman said the change \u201csimply turns an AI feature that allows the creation of unlawful images into a premium service\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a solution. In fact, it\u2019s insulting to the victims of misogyny and sexual violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat it does prove is that X can move swiftly when it wants to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A potential ban on X, which has 20 million users in the UK, would mark a significant escalation in a free speech row between Britain and the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Online Safety Act gives Ofcom, the technology regulator, powers to request a court order requiring internet providers and app stores to prevent access to websites that repeatedly break the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regulator has never exercised its power, and a lengthy legal process would be required should it do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sir Keir said on Thursday: \u201cOfcom has our full support to take action in relation to this. It\u2019s unlawful. We\u2019re not going to tolerate it. I\u2019ve asked for all options to be on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A No 10 spokesman confirmed on Friday that \u201call options\u201d were on the table and that Ofcom had the authority to use its powers to \u201ctake any action\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
