projected to generate more power from coal in 2025 than in 2024, though the resource has endured an assault from the executive branch, green groups and Congress in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">America generated about 13 percent more energy from coal between January and October 2025 than it did during the same period in 2024, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/monthly\/epm_table_grapher.php?t=table_1_01&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a>&nbsp;from the Energy Information Administration. Though the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/07\/02\/trump-america-burning-more-coal-rising-power-demand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biden administration<\/a>, prominent green groups like the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/06\/11\/legacy-green-group-reportedly-axes-more-staff-trump-takes-torch-climate-agenda-sierra-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sierra Club<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/4705\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Congressional Democrats<\/a>&nbsp;have worked to block coal projects and smother the industry in regulations, the energy resource&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/07\/02\/trump-america-burning-more-coal-rising-power-demand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continues to help<\/a>&nbsp;meet America\u2019s power needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate activists and some high-profile Democrats argue that coal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/coal\/coal-and-the-environment.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pollutes the environment<\/a>&nbsp;and should therefore be phased out of the U.S. energy profile. However, critics of this view contend that coal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/07\/02\/trump-america-burning-more-coal-rising-power-demand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remains<\/a>&nbsp;a reliable and affordable source of electricity that is impossible to replace on the accelerated timelines often&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/12\/10\/exclusive-democrats-crippling-electricity-bills-affordability-utilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mandated<\/a>&nbsp;by blue states, forcing a trade-off between an expedited energy transition and maintaining sufficient power supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf Santa leaves you coal this year, you\u2019re obviously on the nice list,\u201d Amy Cooke, co-founder and president of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoenergy.org\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Always on Energy Research<\/a>\u00a0and the director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.i2i.org\/?p=1595\">Energy and Environmental Policy Center<\/a>\u00a0told the Daily Caller News Foundation. \u201cIn a winter of surging demand and cold temperatures, it\u2019s coal plants \u2026 that are the workhorses of the electric grid, delivering round-the-clock, reliable, and affordable power to keep your Christmas lights burning bright.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycallernewsfoundation.org\/2025\/11\/27\/heres-why-your-electricity-bill-may-skyrocket-this-holiday-season\/?utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_campaign=related&amp;utm_source=website\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(RELATED:\u00a0Here\u2019s Why Your Electricity Bill May Skyrocket This Holiday Season)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trump administration\u2019s Department of Energy (DOE) has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/07\/07\/america-power-grid-green-energy-biden-trump-blackouts-ai-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a>\u00a0that continuing to retire reliable power without replacements could trigger 100-fold more blackouts in the U.S. by 2030. Meanwhile, the agency has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/08\/21\/trump-admin-keeps-coal-plant-lifeline-running-despite-seething-enviro-rage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued<\/a>\u00a0multiple\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/ceser\/2025-doe-202c-orders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency orders<\/a>\u00a0aimed at keeping coal plants online amid power shortage concerns, with Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Wednesday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-secretary-ensures-indiana-coal-plants-remain-open-prevent-blackouts-midwest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extending that authority<\/a>\u00a0to two coal plants in Indiana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKeeping these coal plants online has the potential to save lives and is just common sense,\u201d Wright said in a statement Wednesday. \u201cAmericans deserve reliable power regardless of whether the wind is blowing or the sun is shining during extreme winter conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, blackouts that coincided with winter storms led to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasstandard.org\/stories\/texas-freeze-winter-storm-2021-death-count\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">loss of life<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/news\/updates\/SMOC_FebWinterStorm_MortalitySurvReport_12-30-21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whec.com\/top-news\/remembering-buffalo-snowstorm-that-killed-47-people-a-year-ago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York<\/a>&nbsp;in recent years. A recent North American Reliability Report (NERC)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/11\/19\/data-center-blackouts-climate-activists-doe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cmuch of North America\u201d is at risk of failing to meet demand in \u201cextreme operating conditions,\u201d with conditions mirroring that of 2021 before winter storm Uri devastated Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NERC\u2019s Reliability Assessments and Performance Analysis director, John Moura, said that \u201celectricity demand continues to grow faster than the resources being added to the grid,\u201d with the report noting that artificial intelligence (AI) data centers are increasing periods of high energy demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that data centers are increasingly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/the-grid\/data-centers-drive-up-electricity-demand-causing-concern-for-grid-operators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">driving up<\/a>&nbsp;American electricity demand, about 60% of plans to retire oil, gas and coal plants along America\u2019s largest power grid, PJM, have been postponed or cancelled this year, Reuters&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/ai-data-centers-are-forcing-obsolete-peaker-power-plants-back-into-service-2025-12-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cooke told the DCNF that a Colorado utility\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2025\/12\/04\/comanche-2-coal-burning-pueblo-xcel-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extension<\/a>&nbsp;of one coal plant past December helps secure more reliable power for her state, arguing that \u201cwithout it, Colorado would face a darker, colder new year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cColoradans are especially grateful for the early gift of sparing Comanche 2 from an arbitrary, politically driven retirement date of December 31,\u201d Cooke said. \u201cExtending this proven plant\u2019s operation through 2026 isn\u2019t nostalgia \u2014 it\u2019s common sense at a time when reliability and affordability matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colorado is far from the only state that has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/12\/17\/exclusive-utility-costs-energy-crisis-gop-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aggressive mandates<\/a>\u00a0to support an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/energyoffice.colorado.gov\/press-releases\/governor-polis-signs-new-laws-advancing-colorados-leadership-on-climate-change-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">energy transition<\/a>\u00a0that could result in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/05\/30\/energy-groups-congress-letter-biden-epa-power-plant-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">high energy costs<\/a>\u00a0and a destabilized power grid, as most states with the top electricity costs are blue states with stringent profile goals, according to one recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/the-grid\/blue-states-high-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis<\/a>\u00a0from Always on Energy Research and the Institute for Energy Research.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/12\/10\/exclusive-democrats-crippling-electricity-bills-affordability-utilities\/?utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_campaign=related&amp;utm_source=website\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Democrats Are Behind Your Crippling Electricity Bills, Report Confirms)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur grid should not be held hostage to one fuel for baseload power,\u201d&nbsp;Energy and Environment Legal Institute Senior Fellow Steve Milloy told the DCNF, arguing that coal is a vital source of electricity for multiple reasons. \u201cFirst, we have an abundance of it \u2014 hundreds of years\u2019 worth of readily accessible reserves. Although the misguided climate and energy policies of the Obama and Biden administrations destroyed much of our coal infrastructure, much remains, and much can be rebuilt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Milloy also reasoned that coal is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/coal-2025\/prices-and-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inexpensive to burn<\/a>&nbsp;and that it powers America\u2019s grid during periods of high demand more reliably than natural gas as \u201ca coal plant with a pile of coal outside can more readily meet peak demand than a gas plant supplied by a pipeline with gas flowing in at 20 miles per hour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are communities all over America that thrived when coal was king, a scant 15 or so years ago,\u201d Milloy told the DCNF. \u201cThey have suffered as a result of the Obama-Biden war on coal. These communities and their states could benefit greatly from a revived coal industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former President Joe Biden&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/biden-says-coal-plants-all-across-america-will-shut-down-replaced-with-wind-solar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;he would shut coal \u201cplants down all across America,\u201d and adopted aggressive green energy policies that some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/08\/16\/grid-official-warns-biden-power-plant-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top grid officials<\/a>&nbsp;and watchdogs warned could weaken America\u2019s power supply.
