Donald Trump pulled the pin on subsidies for EVs and eased the strict emissions rules that punished petrol and diesel cars. US sales of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/ford-retreats-evs-takes-195-billion-charge-trump-policies-take-hold-2025-12-15\/\">electric cars promptly fell 40% in November.<\/a>&nbsp;Ford\u2019s fell by nearly 60%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, Ford has killed off several electric cars and will swallow a bitter pill of a $19.5 billion US dollar write down. That\u2019s a lot of cars it will have to sell to make that money back. Gone is the fully electric F-150, the next generation electric truck, and any plan to make electric commercial vans. Instead, Ford says it will shift into gas and hybrid models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Motors laid off<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/autos\/general-motors-lays-off-thousands-of-electric-vehicle-workers-in-u-s-plants-ff4f75de\">\u00a03,300 workers at EV\u00a0<\/a>plants in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other side of the Pacific,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiafinancial.com\/shares-of-korean-battery-firms-sink-amid-global-ev-uncertainty\">shares of Korean battery makers \u201cslumped across the board<\/a>\u201d this week after the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day after the Ford announcement the European Commission let the world know it would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drive.com.au\/news\/europe-finally-axes-2035-ban-on-new-petrol-diesel-car-sales\/\">wind back the total ban<\/a>&nbsp;on internal combustion engines which was supposed to come into effect in 2035. Theoretically they\u2019re only dropping the 100% ban to a 90% one. But the ideology has cracked, largely due to the uproar from European car makers who were not selling enough EV\u2019s to make it work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are already calls to drop the 90% rule. It will mean that only the rich will be able to afford the few new petrol and diesel cars available for sale. Presumably the unwashed masses will just keep driving their old cars,.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/ford-electric-vehicle-writedown-jim-farley-government-subsidies-ef2c9b3c\">Ford Learns a Brutal EV Lesson<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The car maker takes a $19.5 billion write-down on its electric-vehicle business.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not long ago, auto makers were touting electric cars as the future. Well, now they are slamming the brakes hard on that future as market reality has hit them like a 16-wheeler. See&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ford Motor<\/a>\u2019s stunning announcement Monday that it will take a $19.5 billion charge on its electric-vehicle business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead of plowing billions into the future knowing these large EVs will never make money, we are pivoting,\u201d Ford CEO Jim Farley said as he explained the company\u2019s plan to boost its lineup of gas-powered cars and hybrids. Ford will also scrap its all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup, which has been a favorite of the EV-loving press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ford has lost $13 billion on its EV business since 2023, with bigger losses expected in years to come. Last year Ford lost about $50,000 for each EV sold. The truth is that the business case for EVs has always rested largely on government subsidies and mandates. Now that this combination of government favoritism and coercion is mostly going away, most car makers have much less reason to make EVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same week as CSIRO decided&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/joannenova.com.au\/2025\/12\/bombshell-uber-green-csiro-admits-100-renewables-is-not-possible\/\"><em>90% renewable was near enough,<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;the EU did a similar thing:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/eu-relent-combustion-engines-ban-after-auto-industry-pressure-2025-12-16\/\">EU drops 2035 combustion engine ban as global EV shift faces reset<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/authors\/philip-blenkinsop\/\">Philip Blenkinsop<\/a>,&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">STRASBOURG, Dec 16 (Reuters) \u2013 The European Commission&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/factbox-whats-european-commissions-proposals-reverse-2035-combustion-engine-ban-2025-12-16\/\">unveiled a plan<\/a>&nbsp;on Tuesday to drop the EU\u2019s effective ban on new combustion-engine cars from 2035 after pressure from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/boards-policy-regulation\/europes-carmakers-look-overturn-2035-combustion-engine-ban-2025-12-15\/\">the region\u2019s auto sector<\/a>,<strong>&nbsp;marking the bloc\u2019s biggest retreat from its green policies in recent years.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dominic Phinn, head of transport at non-profit group Climate Group, countered that the measures were a \u201ctragic win\u201d for the traditional industry over electric cars.&nbsp;\u201cThe watering down of the petrol and diesel-engine phase-out flies in the face of leading companies across Europe, who are investing billions in electric fleets and desperately need the stability it provides,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under Tuesday\u2019s proposal, EU targets would shift to a 90% cut in CO2 emissions from 2021 levels, instead of current rules that all new cars and vans from 2035 have zero emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson, yet again, is that in trying to artificially make EV\u2019s cheaper, Big Government has made all cars more expensive. Ford and everyone else will have to make up those losses somehow. And in trying to reduce emissions, the bureaucrats have almost certainly increased them. By denying&nbsp; the poor a chance to own a new car, they\u2019re undoubtedly kept older, higher emission cars on the road.
