class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A new analysis published by the National Energy System Operator (Neso) said that aiming for an 80pc reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, rather than&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2025\/03\/06\/net-zero-strangling-economy-proof\/\"><em>the current \u201cnet zero\u201d target<\/em><\/a><em>, could save \u00a314bn a year on average.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Conservatives claimed the estimates showed that \u201crushing to net zero\u201d would lumber the UK with sky-high electricity prices for decades and leave Ed Miliband, the Energy Secretary, unable to meet his promise of&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2025\/11\/25\/miliband-waters-down-pledge-to-cut-energy-bills\/\"><em>cutting household bills by \u00a3300<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2025\/10\/23\/ed-milibands-mad-net-zero-crusade-has-suffered-a-fatal-blow\/\"><em>Claire Coutinho<\/em><\/a><em>, the shadow energy secretary, said: \u201cFor years, the public has been told the lie that net zero means cheaper energy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThis report shows the truth \u2013 rushing to net zero is forecast to make our energy system \u00a3350bn more expensive than going slower.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cBritain cannot afford to spend the next 25 years having uncompetitive electricity prices. We would continue to deindustrialise, miss out on the economic growth of AI and see living standards suffer.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Mr Miliband\u2019s department dismissed the findings as merely \u201cillustrative\u201d and said it was possible that the costs of renewables could fall faster than was assumed.
