COP30<\/a> opened in Bel\u00e9m on Monday with a clear message: the era of half-measures is over. Climate change is here, devastating communities and driving up costs, but solutions are within reach. Clean energy is surging, resilience saves lives, and cooperation can still bend the curve further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is the moment to match opportunity with urgency,\u201d said Brazil\u2019s President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva, calling for a decisive defeat of climate denial and faster action to keep the 1.5\u00b0C goal alive.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour job here is not to fight one another \u2013 your job here is to fight this climate crisis, together,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is the growth story of the 21st century \u2013 the economic transformation of our age.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his opening address, President Lula warned that \u201cclimate change is not a threat to the future \u2013 it is a tragedy of the present.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citing Hurricane Melissa in the Caribbean and a tornado in Paran\u00e1, the President declared this \u201cthe COP of truth,\u201d warning that denial and delay are no longer options. \u201cWe are moving in the right direction \u2013 but at the wrong speed,\u201d he said. \u201cCrossing 1.5\u00b0C is a risk we cannot take.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went on to call strongly for an end to climate denialism, underscoring that: \u201cIn the age of disinformation, obscurantists reject not only scientific evidence but also the progress of multilateralism. They control algorithms, sow hatred, spread fear, and attack institutions, science, and universities. It is time to impose a new defeat on denialists.<\/strong> Without the Paris Agreement<\/a>, the world would be heading toward catastrophic warming of nearly 5\u00b0C by the end of the century.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clearly we are not past the age of demonising climate skeptics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a positive note climate skeptics are winning, otherwise we wouldn\u2019t occupy so much realestate in the minds of green true believers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reference to \u201ccontrol algorithms\u201d is intriguing. I\u2019ve said for a while that I believe Silicon Valley big tech abandoned climate activism and secretly helped President Trump win in 2024<\/a>, because they desperately need a secure supply of abundant cheap energy to power their AI systems, to keep up with competitors in Asia. Is President Lula\u2019s references to \u201calgorithms\u201d corroboration of this suspicion?
