class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This year is shaping up as a turning point in<strong>&nbsp;restoring sanity to public policy.<\/strong>&nbsp;Nowhere is the change more evident than in attitudes to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/tag\/green-transition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">green energy policies<\/a>, once the rallying cry for left-wing parties in North America.<strong>&nbsp;Support has collapsed for three pillars of green energy advocacy:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u2666\u00a0building\u00a0<strong>electric vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0to eliminate our need for oil pipelines and refineries;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u2666\u00a0using the<strong>\u00a0financial clout<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/tag\/net-zero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Net-Zero Banking Alliance<\/a>\u00a0to force firms<\/em><br><em>to eliminate carbon emissions; and<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u2666\u00a0<strong>legally mandating the shift<\/strong>\u00a0from fossil fuels to green class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This turning away from green energy policies is reflected in how\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/commodities\/energy\/electric-vehicles\/electric-vehicle-supply-chain-doubts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industrial policy underpinning electric vehicles<\/a>\u00a0<strong>(EV) has been discredited<\/strong>\u00a0over the past year. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/amid-rising-geopolitical-strains-oil-markets-face-new-uncertainties-as-the-drivers-of-supply-and-demand-growth-shift\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Energy Agency<\/a>\u00a0has reversed course and now projects demand will rise by 2.5 million barrels a day between 2024 and 2030. The\u00a0<strong>under-investment in petroleum refining<\/strong>\u00a0resulting from our having bought into the narrative that oil was past peak\u00a0<strong>pushed the industry\u2019s capacity utilization rate to 94.1 per cent in July<\/strong>, the highest of any industry in Canada that month. In 2021\u00a0<strong>Carney spearheaded the launch of the Net-Zero Banking Alliance<\/strong>, which proposed to use access to credit to push firms to adopt policies that eliminated greenhouse gas emissions. But\u00a0<strong>last month<\/strong>, after\u00a0<strong>the world\u2019s largest banks left it, including Canada\u2019s,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/cop\/net-zero-banking-alliance-stop-operations-after-member-vote-2025-10-03\/#:~:text=LONDON%2C%20Oct%203%20(Reuters),that%20membership%20breached%20antitrust%20regulations.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the alliance shut down<\/a>.
