This year is shaping up as a turning point in restoring sanity to public policy.<\/strong> Nowhere is the change more evident than in attitudes to green energy policies<\/a>, once the rallying cry for left-wing parties in North America. Support has collapsed for three pillars of green energy advocacy:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2666\u00a0building\u00a0electric vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0to eliminate our need for oil pipelines and refineries;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2666\u00a0using the\u00a0financial clout<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0Net-Zero Banking Alliance<\/a>\u00a0to force firms<\/em>
to eliminate carbon emissions; and<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2666\u00a0legally mandating the shift<\/strong>\u00a0from fossil fuels to green energy.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This turning away from green energy policies is reflected in how\u00a0industrial policy underpinning electric vehicles<\/a>\u00a0(EV) has been discredited<\/strong>\u00a0over the past year. Companies are\u00a0delaying or abandoning the building of EV assembly and battery plants<\/strong>, mainly because\u00a0EV sales are slumping<\/a>\u00a0following withdrawal of the artificial stimulus of\u00a0government subsidies<\/a>\u00a0in both Canada and the U.S. Walking away from these investments\u00a0leaves governments on the hook<\/strong>\u00a0for billions of dollars they rashly pledged in support of EV projects.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

In Quebec, Northvolt stopped work on a $7-billion battery plant,<\/strong>\u00a0electric bus manufacturer Lion Electric filed for bankruptcy<\/strong>, and the\u00a0Ultium CAM consortium paused plans<\/strong>\u00a0to expand production of materials\u00a0for batteries<\/strong>\u00a0to be used in GM vehicles, which in turn led the\u00a0giant mining company Vale to cancel plans for<\/strong>\u00a0a nickel sulfate plant to supply these batteries.\u00a0In Ontario, Honda delayed<\/strong>\u00a0$15 billion of investments to build EV assembly plants and supply them with batteries, while\u00a0Ford postponed its EV assembly plant plans<\/strong>\u00a0after its\u00a0EV division posted losses of $12 billion<\/a>\u00a0over the past two and a half years. Just last week,\u00a0GM stopped producing electric delivery vans<\/strong>\u00a0at its Ingersoll plant due to slack demand that had \u201cnothing to do with tariffs or trade<\/a>,\u201d according to GM Canada\u2019s president.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

As investment in EV and battery plants collapses into full retreat, the\u00a0outlook for\u00a0fossil fuel demand<\/a>\u00a0improves<\/strong>. The\u00a0International Energy Agency<\/a>\u00a0has reversed course and now projects demand will rise by 2.5 million barrels a day between 2024 and 2030. The\u00a0under-investment in petroleum refining<\/strong>\u00a0resulting from our having bought into the narrative that oil was past peak\u00a0pushed the industry\u2019s capacity utilization rate to 94.1 per cent in July<\/strong>, the highest of any industry in Canada that month. The prospect of demand exceeding capacity\u00a0spurred<\/strong>\u00a0the industry to boost\u00a0investment to over $3 billion last year<\/strong>, double its average over the previous two decades.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The shift in public attitudes to fossil fuels provoked an abrupt about-face in Prime Minister Mark Carney\u2019s stance on energy policy. In 2021\u00a0Carney spearheaded the launch of the Net-Zero Banking Alliance<\/strong>, which proposed to use access to credit to push firms to adopt policies that eliminated greenhouse gas emissions. But\u00a0last month<\/strong>, after\u00a0the world\u2019s largest banks left it, including Canada\u2019s,<\/strong>\u00a0the alliance shut down<\/a>. Even as it did, Carney\u2019s government revived the Keystone XL pipeline proposal to carry Canada\u2019s bitumen to U.S. refineries looking to replace dwindling heavy oil shipments from Mexico and Venezuela.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The tide is also turning against climate-change activists in the legal world. Just last week, a\u00a0U.S. federal court\u00a0ruled against claims<\/a>\u00a0by a group of young people<\/strong>\u00a0that<\/strong>\u00a0the Trump administration\u2019s\u00a0gutting of green energy initiatives violated their human rights.<\/strong>\u00a0The court concluded such an important policy\u00a0issue should be resolved at the ballot box and not in the courts<\/strong>, a precedent we should all hope helps Ontario courts reach the same conclusion in a similar case brought by teenagers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

The setbacks for green energy policies are reflected in\u00a0disarray among left-wing parties in Canada and the U.S. In the U.S.,<\/strong>\u00a0The New York Times reports,\u00a0registration of Democratic voters has fallen<\/strong>\u00a0by two million since last year\u2019s elections, despite high disapproval of Trump\u2019s economic policies. While the radical left rejoices in the candidacy of self-styled Democratic Socialist Zohran\u00a0Mamdani<\/strong>\u00a0for mayor of New York, more\u00a0centrist Democrats, fearing his radical agenda<\/strong>\u00a0will hurt the party in next year\u2019s midterm elections, have been slow to endorse him.\u00a0In Canada, the NDP lost official party status<\/strong>\u00a0in this spring\u2019s federal election as its vote share plumbed historic lows, revealing the folly of Leap manifesto leaders forcing out Thomas Mulcair as NDP leader in 2017 because they wanted more aggressive opposition to fossil fuels.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Policies such as the Green New Deal are not the left\u2019s only vulnerability. Support for woke social movements<\/a> such as DEI<\/strong> (\u201cdiversity, equity and inclusion<\/a>\u201d) has also become a liability<\/strong>. A fundamental problem associated with both the green and woke movements<\/strong> is that advocates are so convinced of<\/strong> the righteousness of their causes<\/strong> that they refuse to countenance debate.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because neither developed arguments that resonated with the public,
that same public is not alarmed to see these policies dismantled.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n
