He said it had been a unity issue internationally and, in the UK, but \u201ctoday sadly\u00a0<strong>that consensus is gone<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many leaders from the world\u2019s largest nations \u2013 India, Russia, US and China \u2013 are notably absent from this year\u2019s summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Only a few dozen leaders have turned up here in Bel\u00e9m, and a majority of countries have failed to submit new plans to cut carbon emissions<\/strong>, the root cause of rising temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite Starmer acknowledging that global political support for the climate movement is waning, he told the gathering of those that were present: \u201c<strong>My message is that the UK is all-in.<\/strong>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>However<\/strong>, on Wednesday night, in a blow to the Brazilian hosts,&nbsp;<strong>the UK chose to opt out of its flagship $125bn (\u00a395bn) fund to support the world\u2019s rainforests.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>President Lula hoped that $25bn could be raised for the Tropical Forests Forever Facility<\/strong>&nbsp;from public sources \u2013&nbsp;<strong>mainly from developed countries like the UK<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 to support governments and communities protecting the world\u2019s rainforests like the Amazon and the Congo Basin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn4j8dgnj1wo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn4j8dgnj1wo<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I understand President Lula Da Silva\u2019s climate angst. I mean, Lula went all out to throw big party, sent everyone an invitation, but hardly anyone bothered to show up. And the few that did show up drank all the beer without throwing enough cash in the tip box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be fair, maybe the weather in Bel\u00e9m deterred leaders of temperate countries. Bel\u00e9m is a steamy inland tropical jungle town just south of the equator, where even the night time temperature is in the mid 70s. Humidity rarely drops below 70%, and likely approaches 100% during rain showers. Not everyone likes that kind of weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe next time COP is hosted in a South American nation, they should pick somewhere high up in the Andes, so participants can go for a stroll and look at a melting glacier. Somewhere like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Rinconada,_Peru\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">La Rinconada in Peru<\/a>.
