AT least 64 people were killed and 81 arrested as 2,500 heavily armed police and soldiers stormed Rio de Janeiro\u2019s favelas in the city\u2019s largest-ever anti-gang operation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Gun battles raged for hours on Tuesday across the Alem\u00e3o and Penha complexes, the strongholds of the powerful Red Command (Comando Vermelho) gang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conflict has left \u201cbodies strewn all over the streets,\u201d according to a community leader quoted by O Globo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governor Cl\u00e1udio Castro said the city was \u201cat war,\u201d calling it \u201cthe biggest operation in the history of Rio de Janeiro.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rio De Janeiro is around 1300 miles from Bel\u00e9m, the city which is hosting COP30 in just over a week. Nevertheless, with open gun battles in the streets of Rio, the\u00a0Comando Vermelho<\/a>\u00a0narco terrorists might see COP30 as a golden opportunity to grab some high value hostages to leverage Rio de Janeiro authorities into backing down, or to force the release of arrested gang leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comando Vermelho<\/a> have a long track record of hijacking and kidnapping for ransom, in addition to being significant regional narco traffickers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
