cooler \u2013 and tending to long-recognized public health threats are the best ways to ensure the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants, according to an Australian physician and expert in climate and public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe ingenuity of Homo sapiens at adapting to climate has permitted people to populate almost the entire globe from the freezing Arctic to the steamy tropics, notes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/co2coalition.org\/teammember\/d-weston-allen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. D. Weston Allen<\/a>, lead author of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/co2coalition.org\/publications\/climate-change-and-health\/\">paper<\/a>&nbsp;supporting a proposed repeal of a federal designation of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) as a pollutant. \u201cIf we stick to doing what we do best \u2013 adaptation \u2013 we will continue to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t\t<figure class=\"wp-block-jetpack-videopress jetpack-videopress-player\" style=\"\" >\n\t\t\t<div class=\"jetpack-videopress-player__wrapper\"> <div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"VideoPress Video Player\" aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='723' height='482' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/mR9icvRe?cover=1&amp;autoPlay=1&amp;controls=1&amp;loop=1&amp;muted=0&amp;persistVolume=1&amp;playsinline=1&amp;preloadContent=metadata&amp;useAverageColor=1&amp;hd=0' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen data-resize-to-parent=\"true\" allow='clipboard-write'><\/iframe><script src='https:\/\/v0.wordpress.com\/js\/next\/videopress-iframe.js?m=1739540970'><\/script><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citing nearly 400 references, the paper was filed as a formal comment by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/co2coalition.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;Coalition<\/a>, Fairfax, Virginia, with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency&nbsp;in support of its proposal to rescind the regulation known as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-releases-proposal-rescind-obama-era-endangerment-finding-regulations-paved-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Endangerment Finding<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Allen says that civilizations did well in past eras of relative warmth during Minoan and Roman times and the Medieval Warm Period. And, he says, cool periods often brought suffering, the most recent being the Little Ice Age, which experienced \u201cfrequent widespread crop failures, mass starvation, disease and depopulation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Black Death of 1346-1353 wiped out 30%-60% of Europe\u2019s population and up to 200 million people across Eurasia,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, natural change in the climate and industrialization that spread in the 1800s and accelerated in the 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century fostered unprecedented prosperity and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGlobal rewarming since the 18<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century, associated with increasing prosperity, better housing, sanitation, food and water supplies, has greatly benefited human health and wealth,\u201d says Dr. Allen. \u201cDeaths from typhoid and tuberculosis declined dramatically during pre-antibiotic 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century warming (1910-1945). Mortality from all causes fell as temperatures rose. From a billion people in 1800, the global population doubled by 1927, doubled again to 4 billion in 1974 and again to 8 billion in 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fuels for new technologies and industry \u2013 first coal then oil and natural gas as well \u2013 made modern living possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy cheaply and reliably powering industry, mechanizing agriculture and transport, fossil fuels helped to end slavery and emancipate women and children, propelled urbanization, sewerage, safe water supplies, electricity, heating and cooling,\u201d the paper says. \u201cThey also facilitated better hospitals and health care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In places where fossil fuels are available and affordable, people live longer, healthier lives. Access to electricity enables disease surveillance, vaccination drives, and reliable transport for medicines and doctors. Africa, Asia, and South America \u2014 regions once ravaged by cholera, malaria, and famine \u2014 now see falling death rates and rising lifespans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1968, biologist Paul Ehrlich published \u201cThe Population Bomb,\u201d warning of mass starvation in the 1970s, recalls Dr. Allen. Crop yields soared, aided by higher atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;(the same gas vilified in climate debates) and the fertilizers, pesticides and modern equipment dependent on fossil fuels.
