Now AI has come to the rescue to, again, postpone the inevitable\u2013more bad luck! (Never mind that thing called\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.econlib.org\/library\/Columns\/y2012\/Bradleyresourceship.html\">resourceship<\/a><\/em>, explaining how the improvement process is open-ended.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is good is bad to the nature-is-optimal-and-fragile\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thedailyeconomy.org\/article\/inside-the-church-of-climate\/\">Deep Ecologists<\/a>. More people. Growing resource usage. Higher living standards. All bad. Remember this quotation by Paul and Anne Ehrlich and two-term Obama science advisor John Holdren?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A massive campaign must be launched to restore a high-quality environment in North America and to&nbsp;de-develop the United States. . . . Resources and energy must be diverted from frivolous and wasteful uses in overdeveloped countries to filling the genuine needs of underdeveloped countries. This effort must be largely political.&nbsp;<strong>[1]<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Holly Alpine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hollyalpine\/\">Holly Alpine<\/a>, \u201cclimate strategist &amp; campaign leader; co-founder, Enabled Emissions Campaign; Ex-Microsoft Sustainability board member; plant-based athlete,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>[2]<\/strong>&nbsp;recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/hollyalpine_ai-artificialintelligence-responsibleai-activity-7384651637455413248-rbz-?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAGV90kBtoxOIMAg-JwpHsSY2-j34xhgcC8\">posted<\/a>&nbsp;on LinkedIn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery Last Drop\u201d\u2026 they\u2019re not even trying to hide it at this point. You may have seen this new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/wood-mackenzie\/\">Wood Mackenzie<\/a>&nbsp;report shared by&nbsp;<strong>Ketan Joshi<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/petebronski\/\">Pete Bronski<\/a>, but I need to weigh in too, because\u2026 I hope now you see why&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/willalpine\/\">Will<\/a>&nbsp;and I quit our jobs to start our campaign on the topic.<br><br>Just two quotes:<br>\u2022 \u201cUsing our&nbsp;data&nbsp;on reservoir geology, hydrocarbon quality, in-place resources, operator access to finance and technology, costs and fiscal terms, we estimate upside oil recovery factors for every significant field in the world.\u201d<br>\u2022 \u201cThe results of our new AI-powered analysis, therefore, are encouraging. Better recovery from existing fields could yield an additional 470 billion to over 1,000 billion barrels of oil\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She complained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a TRILLION ADDITIONAL barrels of oil [that] would not otherwise be possible.\u00a0\ud83e\udd2f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our math (thanks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mrchrisadams\/\">Chris Adams<\/a>!) shows that could be 400 *gigatons* of emissions \u2013 using up the entire remaining 1.5 \u00b0C carbon budget, erasing decades of global climate progress, and gravely threatening a livable future on this planet. Is there any other issue on Earth that comes anywhere close to that scale of impact?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In plain language: fossil fuels were becoming too difficult and expensive to produce \u2013 until AI came along to make them profitable again. That isn\u2019t \u201cinnovation\u201d \u2013 it\u2019s acceleration toward climate collapse.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She explained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m NOT talking here about the energy use of AI or datacenters \u2013 those issues are critical fights in their own right and are deeply connected within the same system. But this post is focused on a different systemic dimension: how AI is directly enabling expanded fossil fuel production on a global scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The framing of \u201cAI for sustainability vs. datacenter energy use\u201d is completely missing a huge factor in the equation. How are we comparing infrastructure impacts to hypothetic, potential emissions reductions use cases, while ignoring the entire other side of the equation \u2013 the technology\u2019s role in driving more fossil fuel production itself (and incredible resulting emissions)? We\u2019re comparing apples to oranges and ignoring the other VERY big orange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She then touches on the futility problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you work in climate (or live on Earth), your efforts and future are being undermined in real time. You\u2019re running on a treadmill on a train going backward. Fossil fuels are not the problem but part of the solution for human betterment in a free society.
