Stop the presses. Summon the fact-checkers. Alert Greta\u2019s yacht. Because, dear reader, the climate heretics have\u00a0pounced<\/em>\u00a0again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, that\u2019s the headline this week from the stenographers over at E&E News<\/em>, a Politico-adjacent publication that reads like the employee newsletter for the Church of Saint Carbon Credit. The story begins in the key of outrage: \u201cClimate critics try to discredit IPCC author for linking disasters to global warming.<\/strong>\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Translation from Journo-speak: \u201cSomeone noticed the emperor\u2019s new lab coat is made of recycled grant money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently, Roger Pielke Jr. \u2014 a political scientist with the unfortunate habit of reading data instead of chanting slogans \u2014 wrote an op-ed questioning whether Dr. Friederike Otto, an activist who co-founded World Weather Attribution<\/em>, might not be the most neutral person to help lead the next United Nations climate report. Otto\u2019s research, you see, keeps showing up in lawsuits against the oil and gas industry. Big ones. The kind of lawsuits where the legal fees could buy an entire Tesla fleet and still leave room for a virtue-signaling dinner at Davos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, any normal reporter might think, Hmm, that sounds like a potential conflict of interest worth exploring.<\/em> But we\u2019re not dealing with normal reporters here. We\u2019re dealing with the High Clergy of the Narrative. So instead of \u201cUN installs activist whose work is fueling climate lawsuits,\u201d we get, \u201cFossil fuel industry allies attack a scientist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because in modern media theology, questioning the priest is a greater sin than whatever the priest did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the \u201cRepublicans pounce\u201d phenomenon, that magical incantation journalists deploy whenever someone on the left does something indefensible. A Democrat governor gets caught vacationing mask-less during lockdowns? Republicans pounce. The FBI loses another laptop? Republicans pounce. And now, when a UN scientist with open activist ties takes a key seat in the IPCC, what happens? Climate critics pounce.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Holy Narrative Must Be Protected<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The E&E News<\/em> piece begins in high moral tones, as if announcing an indictment at The Hague:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then we learn that Pielke\u2019s concerns \u2014 namely, that putting an activist whose studies are used in billion-dollar lawsuits at the helm of a supposedly neutral IPCC chapter might hurt credibility \u2014 are just part of an \u201cattack.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine the scene in any other field. Suppose a tobacco company lawyer suddenly became the lead author on a World Health Organization report about lung cancer. Think anyone at Politico would write, \u201cTobacco critics try to discredit WHO expert\u201d? Of course not. They\u2019d be live-tweeting the bonfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when it\u2019s climate science, rules don\u2019t apply. The journalist\u2019s job is not to ask questions but to shield the narrative from contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Church of Settled Science<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Otto, the subject of this crusade of sympathy, runs a group that specializes in what\u2019s called \u201cattribution science\u201d \u2014 studies claiming to show how much a given weather event was worsened by human-caused climate change. Once the piece establishes Otto\u2019s sainthood, it pivots to the villain: the Trump administration<\/em>. Because you can\u2019t write about climate without invoking the Orange Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re told that Trump officials have \u201cworked to discredit established climate science.\u201d The evidence? They released their own report that concluded the IPCC\u2019s worst-case scenarios were exaggerated. The horror. Apparently, doing your own research is now an act of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, right on cue, the article quotes Rachel Cleetus of the Union of Concerned Scientists \u2014 a name that sounds like a 1970s garage band but functions as the Vatican of climate activism \u2014 who assures us that the criticism of Otto is a \u201cdeliberate mischaracterization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cleetus adds that \u201cno individual scientist hijacks the IPCC process.\u201d That line alone deserves an award for unintentional comedy. Bureaucratic hijacking is practically the IPCC\u2019s house sport. The organization has been producing consensus-by-committee reports for decades, with \u201cconsensus\u201d defined as \u201cwhatever the politicians agree to in the summary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But E&E News<\/em> dutifully prints her words as gospel, unchallenged, because climate journalism isn\u2019t about reporting \u2014 it\u2019s about catechism reinforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Dare You Ask About Bias!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Halfway through the story, E&E News<\/em> finally concedes the real issue: Otto\u2019s \u201cextreme event attribution\u201d work has been cited in multiple lawsuits, including a $51 billion claim by Multnomah County, Oregon. The plaintiffs\u2019 lawyers literally use her studies as ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the kind of revelation that, in sane times, would lead to tough follow-ups: Does this create a conflict of interest? Should the IPCC separate itself from litigation-linked research? What safeguards exist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But instead of questions, the journalists sprint to mop up the spill. We\u2019re reassured that the IPCC\u2019s author-selection process is \u201cbalanced\u201d and \u201cprotected from the influence of special interests.\u201d Because if there\u2019s one thing the UN is known for, it\u2019s the absence of special interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s all boilerplate \u2014 the bureaucratic equivalent of \u201ctrust us, we\u2019ve got this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Otto, for her part, insists that her work has \u201cabsolutely nothing to do with litigation.\u201d Right. And my gym membership has absolutely nothing to do with my expanding waistline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also complains that her critics \u201ctook her comments out of context.\u201d That\u2019s the universal defense of anyone caught saying something inconvenient. The context, presumably, is that she meant to say something else entirely while articulating exactly what she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Media\u2019s Favorite Sport: Pretend Objectivity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The last quarter of the article plays clean-up like a press secretary. We\u2019re told that Otto\u2019s co-author in Germany has \u201cabsolutely no concerns,\u201d that other scientists call her methods \u201cfundamental science,\u201d and that the World Weather Attribution project is \u201csuper transparent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course it\u2019s transparent \u2014 you can see right through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the best part is the tone: a mixture of solemn authority and parental disappointment. The reporters write as though they\u2019re explaining to a confused child that Santa Claus is real and the mean old skeptics are just trying to ruin Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The message: The science is settled, the lawsuits are righteous, and if you disagree you probably own a pickup truck.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pattern of \u201cPounce\u201d Politics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The structure of this story could be used to teach Journalism 101 \u2014 assuming the class was called Narrative Protection for Fun and Profit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: Identify a left-wing actor engaged in dubious behavior.
Step 2: Shift focus from the act to the reaction.

One reason this works so well is that climate reporting runs on credentialism. The journalist\u2019s worldview is built around deference to \u201cexperts.\u201d If someone has a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Feelings from the University of Virtue, the press treats their statements as immutable law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even people who accept the climate narrative instinctively sense the propaganda. It\u2019s too heavy-handed. Too self-righteous. You can almost hear the subtext whispering: Don\u2019t ask questions. We already did the thinking for you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bureaucracy of Belief<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
