The push to transition to \u201cgreen\u201d energy technologies threatens to further entrench the long history of global inequalities and Western domination and exploitation.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vast quantities of raw materials (such as cobalt, nickel, lithium) are required to supply the European Union\u2019s demands for \u201cgreen\u201d energy \u2013 battery production and green hydrogen deployment \u2013 over the coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of these raw materials are derived from African, South American, and Indonesian countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To secure these resources, then, Western exploitation of less-advantaged countries \u2013 disguised as a fa\u00e7ade for \u201cclimate action\u201d \u2013 appears to be a nearly inevitable policy pathway going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some scientists (Boretti, 2025<\/a><\/strong> and Boretti et al., 2025<\/a><\/strong>) are concerned with furthering institutions of global inequality and draining less-advantaged countries of their natural resources. Thus, they are encouraging the leaders of countries in the \u201cGlobal South\u201d to assert their sovereignty over their resources and resist the impending \u201cgreen colonialism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
