Former prime minister believes he got \u2018carried away\u2019 by the idea of renewable energy sources<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Boris Johnson has admitted he went \u201cfar too fast\u201d on net zero when he was prime minister, in his most outspoken comments against the policy he championed. The Telegraph<\/a> has the story.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Johnson said he got \u201ccarried away\u201d by the idea that renewable energy sources could replace fossil fuels and, as a result, electricity is \u201ctoo expensive for ordinary people\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He warned against \u201cjunking net zero altogether\u201d but said Labour\u2019s target of making the UK carbon neutral by 2050 should be pushed back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Johnson makes the comments in a forthcoming book called Prosperity Through Growth, which has Tory peer Lord Elliott, founder of the TaxPayers\u2019 Alliance, and Dr Arthur Laffer, a celebrated US economist, among its co-authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative Party leader, announced plans to scrap the Climate Change Act if she becomes prime minister, which was described as a \u201ccatastrophic mistake\u201d by Baroness May, Mr Johnson\u2019s predecessor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was Mr Johnson who, as prime minister, set ambitious targets for reducing carbon emissions and argued the business case for promoting wind, solar and other forms of renewable energy. He tried to get other countries to agree to legally binding reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, which even the green lobby argued was over-ambitious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Johnson said that as soon as the Ukraine war<\/a> pushed up gas prices \u2013 which determine the wholesale price of all types of energy \u2013 it became clear that the net zero strategy had to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite Ed Miliband, the Net Zero Secretary,\u00a0promising that energy bills would come down by \u00a3300 by 2030<\/a>, household bills have continued to rise, partly because bill-payers are charged a levy for Mr Miliband\u2019s green energy policies.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
