Protecting your property from damage and other people from injury<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t risk injury to others or damage to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/weather\/warnings-and-advice\/seasonal-advice\/your-home\/protecting-your-property-from-winter-weather\">your property<\/a>. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them in high winds.<br>Items include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>bins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plant pots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>garden furniture (bring inside or secure in place)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>trampolines (turn upside down or secure with tent pegs)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sheds (ensure doors are locked)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>2. Things you can do before a journey<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Windy weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. Follow these few simple steps to prepare before journeys:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plan your route, check for delays and road closures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listen out for travel updates on your car radio\/sat nav<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you don\u2019t have essentials in your car then pack for the worst (warm clothing, food, drink, blanket, torch)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a fully charged mobile phone with an in-car charger or battery pack<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>3. Driving safely in strong wind<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/weather\/warnings-and-advice\/seasonal-advice\/travel\/driving-in-severe-weather\">Driving in these conditions<\/a>&nbsp;can be dangerous, for yourself and other road users. If you must drive, you can do this more safely by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Driving slowly to minimise the impact of wind gusts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of high sided vehicles\/caravans on more exposed roads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be cautious overtaking high sided vehicles\/caravans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you hold the steering wheel firmly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give cyclists, motorcyclists, lorries and buses more room than usual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/weather\/warnings-and-advice\/seasonal-advice\/travel\/travelling-in-storms-rain-and-wind\">travelling in storms, rain and heavy wind<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>4. Staying safe when you\u2019re at the coast<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you live or work on the coast, take extra care during windy and stormy weather. Keep yourself and others safe by following these simple steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check the forecasts and tides in your local area\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/weather\/specialist-forecasts\/coast-and-sea\/beach-forecast-and-tide-times\">here<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beware of large waves, even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take care if walking near cliffs \u2013 know your route and keep dogs on a lead<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In an emergency 999 (UK) or 112 (Ireland) and ask for the Coastguard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>5. Avoiding injury if you\u2019re out and about<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being outside in high winds makes you more vulnerable to injury. Stay indoors as much as possible.
