Dr. Michael Mann is at it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his latest op-ed for the San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> \u2014 melodramatically titled \u201cI\u2019m a climate scientist. Trump\u2019s U.N. address is a fire hose of misinformation<\/a>\u201d<\/em>\u2014 Mann plays the role of truth-teller, warning the public about Donald Trump\u2019s supposedly dangerous rhetoric at the United Nations. According to Mann, nearly \u201cevery single word [Trump] spoke drips with mendacity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when you peel back the grandiose framing, Mann\u2019s essay reads less like the sober analysis of a scientist and more like the polemic of an activist. Worse, much of what he accuses Trump of doing \u2014 cherry-picking, exaggerating, revising history, and fearmongering \u2014 is precisely what Mann himself has perfected over the last 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if Mann wants to talk about \u201cfire hoses of misinformation,\u201d then let\u2019s have that conversation. But let\u2019s do it honestly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mann the Politician, Not the Scientist<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early in the piece, Mann frames Trump\u2019s speech as part of an \u201canti-science agenda\u201d. This is a rhetorical sleight of hand he\u2019s used for decades: conflate \u201cscience\u201d with \u201cMichael Mann\u2019s opinions about climate policy.\u201d Anyone who questions him is not engaging in debate, but waging war on science itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not how science works. Science is not a political loyalty oath, nor is it a courtroom drama (though Mann has spent more time in the courts than most scientists). It is about predictions, testing, and falsification. And this is where Mann\u2019s own record collapses under scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mann\u2019s Hurricane Prediction Debacle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Trump\u2019s speech was a \u201cfire hose\u201d of questionable claims, then Mann\u2019s hurricane predictions over the past decade are a burst water main.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
