electricity bills on President Trump \u2014 his One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), his tighter scrutiny of wind and solar, and even emergency reliability orders. The data tell a different story: prices climbed sharply before the OBBBA could plausibly matter, demand is rising fast, the \u201crenewables are cheap\u201d sales pitch is still history, and the system-wide costs land on ratepayers.<strong><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/the-grid\/rising-bills-bad-blame-whats-really-driving-electricity-prices\/\">IER<\/a> has the story.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The price record \u2014 before OBBBA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenews.net\/articles\/dems-go-all-in-on-energy-price-messaging-will-it-work\/\">Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has recently rallied Democrats<\/a>&nbsp;around electricity prices, calling them one of the Republicans\u2019 \u201cweakest points.\u201d Democratic lawmakers are flooding town halls and social media with claims that Republican hostility toward renewables is driving up utility bills, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/eenews\/2025\/08\/19\/green-group-rolls-out-campaign-against-gop-megalaw-00514204\">Democratic-aligned groups are spending millions on advertising to make the same point<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the reality is that electricity rates have been rising for years:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/monthly\/pdf\/sec9_11.pdf\">Residential electricity prices jumped ~25% during the Biden years<\/a>: the Energy Information Administration\u2019s (EIA) Electric Power Monthly shows the U.S. residential average rising from 13.15\u00a2\/kWh in 2020 to 16.48\u00a2\/kWh in 2024 \u2014 about +25% \u2014 with 2025 running higher still.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They\u2019re still rising: From June 2024 to June 2025, average electric rates increased nearly 7%, with more hikes pending,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/residents-in-at-least-41-states-and-washington-d-c-are-facing-increased-electric-and-natural-gas-bills\/\">according to reporting on new analysis from the Center for American Progress<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the OBBBA and President Trump\u2019s policies are the culprit, why were prices already up so much before their provisions could even bite?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Policy timing matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The OBBBA\u2019s phase-outs don\u2019t rip out existing subsidies tomorrow morning, next month, or even next year.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/the-grid\/will-the-one-big-beautiful-bill-increase-the-price-of-electricity\/\">As explained in our earlier analysis<\/a>, the OBBBA ends the wind\/solar Production Tax Credit (PTC) and Investment Tax Credit (ITC) only for new facilities placed in service after Dec. 31, 2027, and for projects that haven\u2019t begun construction by July 4, 2026 \u2014 with a further \u201cbegin construction\u201d carve-out that can stretch eligibility into 2030. And because the PTC pays for 10 years, projects placed in service before those deadlines can collect into the 2030s. In short, there is no near-term subsidy cliff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even analysts whose policy preferences do not align with those of President Trump concede there\u2019s a lag before any Trump-era policy shift shows up in regulated retail rates.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/5482442-energy-chris-wright-high-electricity-bills\/\">As MIT\u2019s Christopher Knittel put it<\/a>, \u201cTrump\u2019s effects on the rate changes won\u2019t take place until after the midterms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Demand is the near-term driver<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-power-use-reach-record-highs-2025-2026-eia-says-2025-09-09\/\">Electricity use is setting new records in 2025\u201326<\/a>, driven in part by artificial intelligence (AI)\/data centers, with the EIA and market analysts flagging broad-based growth in residential, commercial, and industrial sales.
