The failure of a vital ocean upwelling has sparked concerns of catastrophic effects for life, according to scientists<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year, between December and April, northerly winds create a rising current in the deep waters of the Gulf of Panama.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This upwelling brings cold, nutrient-rich waters to the surface, protecting vulnerable coral reefs and triggering an explosion of ocean life.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, researchers now say the Panama Pacific upwelling has failed for the first time in over 40 years of records \u2013 and it could be a permanent change.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The researchers warn that the collapse of this critical yearly pattern could have \u2018potentially massive\u2019 consequences \u2013 and climate could be to blame.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might have thought climate scientists would understand the difference between CLIMATE and WEATHER!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just because this is the first time this has happened in 40 years does not mean it has not happened may times in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And tucked away in the article is an admission that \u201cscientists studying the upwelling aren\u2019t yet sure whether this is a one-off event caused by this year\u2019s La Ni\u00f1a conditions, or a more permanent change that could have disastrous ecological and economic consequences\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area in question is tiny, a micro-climate where all sorts of complex meteorological factors can shift the winds. Nobody understands the full complexities involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is easier to blame climate change and get paid some more grant money.<\/p>\n\n\n
