Ed Miliband<\/em><\/a> blew almost \u00a3700m of taxpayers\u2019 cash on grants for heat pumps during his first year in office, new industry analysis reveals.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Energy Secretary has overseen a gargantuan increase in spending on support to install <\/em>heat pumps<\/em><\/a>, which has more than tripled in the space of just 24 months.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year he spent more on pushing families to take up heat pumps than ministers will save by restricting the winter fuel payment for pensioners.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Annual grants now also outstrip the projected income from the family farm tax, which <\/em>Rachel Reeves<\/em><\/a> has said is necessary to stabilise the economy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grants are required because it costs on average just over \u00a313,000 to install an air-source heat pump, compared to just \u00a33,000 to put in a gas boiler.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics accused the Energy Secretary of forcing up the bills of ordinary households to pay for the grants and achieve his net zero targets.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry analysis of Department for Net Zero figures reveals that \u00a3692,108,250 was spent on such grants between July last year and this June.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figure of \u00a3700 million includes the cost of zero rate VAT for heat pumps, something that is not available for gas boilers. At \u00a313000 a time, this is worth another \u00a32600 for anybody buying a heat pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added to the grant of \u00a37500, that means a subsidy of over \u00a310k.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
