chartered in 1863 to do just that. However, as with so many of our venerated institutions in recent years, it has dived head-first into many progressive policy priorities and fallen prey to other destructive influences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Science is suffering from a reproducibility crisis, where identifying bogus, manipulated, and politicized research has become a cottage industry. This is due in no small part to torch-wielding activists burning down institutions that produce research that fails to support the \u201cright\u201d conclusions. Rather than fighting it, the National Academies have too often given fuel to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/catalog\/26424\/measuring-sex-gender-identity-and-sexual-orientation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">torch-wielders<\/a>. NASEM\u2019s tepid, caveated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/catalog\/25858\/reopening-k-12-schools-during-the-covid-19-pandemic-prioritizing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 report<\/a>&nbsp;on school reopening was a&nbsp;<em>de facto<\/em>&nbsp;invitation for teachers\u2019 unions to throw their weight around, prolonging the damaging closures. As if that weren\u2019t bad enough, the report included an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/read\/25858\/chapter\/9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">epilogue<\/a>&nbsp;on \u201cthe epidemic of systemic racism.\u201d Predictably, the students NASEM professed to be most concerned about were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2022\/05\/remote-learning-likely-widened-racial-economic-achievement-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most harmed<\/a>&nbsp;by the closures the report helped prolong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month Donald Trump\u2019s Environmental Protection Agency announced it was beginning the process to reverse the 2009 Clean Air Act Endangerment Finding, which granted the feds authority to regulate CO<sub>2<\/sub>. Since its inception, skeptics have worried that this policy was driven by progressive special interests. A recent dump of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/politics-policy\/energy\/trumps-epa-scrutinizes-endangerment-finding-emails-suggest-obama-epa-process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public records<\/a>&nbsp;suggested the Obama-era officials\u2019 finding was pre-determined \u2014 a no-no under the Administrative Procedures Act. This kicked off a very profitable period for researchers, consultants, and environmental NGOs who rushed to gorge at the trough of what they termed the climate crisis. NASEM, technically a non-profit foundation which has not only received significant government money to promote climate alarmism but has actively&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/giving\/donate\/ccx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">solicited<\/a>&nbsp;private donations for that cause, decided it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/07082025\/national-academies-will-review-endangerment-finding-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ain\u2019t gonna take<\/a>&nbsp;the EPA\u2019s recent move lying down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcia McNutt, president of NASEM\u2019s National Academy of Sciences, declared the organization will be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/news\/2025\/08\/national-academies-launch-fast-track-review-of-latest-evidence-for-whether-greenhouse-gas-emissions-endanger-public-health-and-welfare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conducting<\/a>&nbsp;a \u201cfast-track review\u201d studying \u201cthe latest scientific evidence on whether greenhouse gas emissions are reasonably anticipated to endanger public health and welfare in the U.S.\u201d In other words, NASEM, tasked with providing advice to the federal government \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/beckman-center\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whenever called upon<\/a>,\u201d is taking the extraordinary step of proactively second-guessing the EPA\u2019s decision and advising the government, whether the government asked for it or not. Historically, it has been a responsive organization, weighing in to provide expertise to support the government\u2019s needs. Thus, it is highly unusual, if not unprecedented, for NASEM to insert itself into a federal agency process absent a request to do so \u2014 and certainly to wade into a politically fraught subject at the center of a pending high-profile regulatory effort, such as rescinding the Endangerment Finding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ideology aside, NASEM appears to be heavily dependent on government support \u2014 receiving approximately&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/national-academies-staggering-trump-cuts-brink-dramatic-downsizing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$200 million<\/a>&nbsp;from government coffers in 2023. That is, until the Department of Government Efficiency began auditing federal research dollars suspected of being used improperly or to promote progressive policy priorities such as DEI, gender ideology, and climate alarmism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/3446932\/trumps-culture-war-offensive-is-working\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>TRUMP\u2019S CULTURE WAR OFFENSIVE IS WORKING<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The audit has hit NASEM hard. Contract cancelations and stop work orders have undoubtedly left the organization scrambling, with Ms. McNutt announcing in May that 250 of its 1100 staffers could lose their positions over substantial funding cuts. Staff reactions to scrubbing \u201cwokeness\u201d haven\u2019t mollified critics. One&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/national-academies-staggering-trump-cuts-brink-dramatic-downsizing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>&nbsp;revealed NASEM \u201cmembers [] expressed outrage when staff were ordered to purge words such as \u2018health equity\u2019 and \u2018marginalized populations\u2019 from complete or near-complete reports this winter,\u201d and Ms. McNutt and NASEM chief operating officer Greg Symmes dissolved the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, \u201cciting executive orders from Trump and NASEM\u2019s obligations as a federal government contractor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. McNutt and NASEM\u2019s decision to insert themselves further into the political fray is likely to attract more scrutiny. It is not far-fetched to think that fungible taxpayer funds that have yet to be fully DOGE\u2019d might be deployed for this self-initiated activist effort to stop the EPA from derailing what many see as a climate alarmism gravy train. As a long-time VIP rider on the train, opposing the EPA may make sense to NASEM climateers. The decision was prompted after a group of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/x-7422-Cobb-County-Conservative-Examiner~y2009m8d14-Prominent-scientists-push-to-revise-physics-society-climate-statement\">over 80 prominent physicists petitioned the APS<\/a>&nbsp;revise its global warming position and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.openletter-globalwarming.info\/Site\/HOME.html\">more than 250 scientists urged<\/a>&nbsp;a change in the group\u2019s climate statement in 2010.&nbsp;An American Physical Society editor conceded that&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.news.com.au\/heraldsun\/andrewbolt\/index.php\/heraldsun\/comments\/no_consensus_and_no_warming_either\">a \u201cconsiderable presence\u201d of scientific skeptics exists.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2010 Open Letter signed by more than 130 German scientists urging German Chancellor to \u201creconsider\u201d her climate views.
