Multiple media outlets reported on a study concluding that climate change would reduce GDP by 19% over the next 24 years, compared to what it would have been without global warming.<\/em><\/strong> Now multiple analyses have found the influential study flawed, and most aren’t reporting on the scandal.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

hen a\u00a0study published last year<\/a>\u00a0in the peer-reviewed journal\u00a0Nature<\/em>\u00a0found that climate change would cost the globe $38 trillion per year by 2050 \u2014 ultimately reducing GDP by 19% over the next 24 years \u2014 many media outlets were quick to jump on it.\u00a0 Just The News<\/a> has the story.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cClimate change will make you poorer,\u201d CNN warned<\/a>. The Guardian<\/em> reported<\/a> on the study under the headline, \u201cClimate crisis: average world incomes to diminish by nearly a fifth by 2050.\u201d Reuters<\/a> and Forbes<\/em><\/a> also carried articles on the study, and the Associated Press reported<\/a> that \u201cNew study calculates climate change\u2019s economic bite will hit about $38 trillion a year by 2049.\u201d According to the activist publication Carbon Brief<\/em><\/a>, only one other study received more mentions in the media in 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the study \u2014 referred to as “the Potsdam study” \u2014 has since been found to have serious flaws. When these are corrected, according to the researchers<\/a> who uncovered the problems, it reduces the study\u2019s estimate of climate “damages” through 2100 by two-thirds. This means the estimates aren\u2019t statistically different from zero. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study has been cited by organizations influencing policy across the globe, including the World Bank<\/a>, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development<\/a>, and the U.S. Congressional Budget Office<\/a>. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., cited the study last year<\/a> and again in July<\/a> \u2014 both times entering the study into the Congressional Record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While The Washington Post<\/em> reported<\/a> on the errors, none of the other outlets have so far revisited the story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
