And Maybe, Just Maybe, a Way Out.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Positive climate action can have cascading effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BY&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/author\/2793\/darren-orf\/\">DARREN ORF<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;PUBLISHED:&nbsp;AUG 08, 2025 9:30 AM EDT<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll learn when you read this story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scientists are aware of planetary boundaries\u2014a series of climate change thresholds that, once crossed, could cause a cascade of negative environmental effects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now, scientists are developing a methodology to discover \u201cpositive tipping points\u201d\u2014 a series of actionable green energy goals that could similarly compound in benefit once crossed.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While we\u2019re already well on the way to reaching some of these tipping points\u2014i.e. lowering the cost of wind and solar energy\u2014<strong>there\u2019s still lots of work to be done to stay within the two degrees Celsius range<\/strong>\u00a0stipulate by the 2015 Paris Climate Accords.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To live in an era of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/environment\/a23552633\/climate-change-social-cost-of-carbon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anthropogenic climate change<\/a>&nbsp;is to be constantly reminded of the warming threat to our planet. One way scientists illustrate this threat is by using climate tipping points, also known&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/environment\/a61626811\/aquatic-deoxygenation-planetary-boundaries-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as planetary boundaries<\/a>, which showcase around nine critical ecological thresholds that could have devastating effects for life on Earth once crossed. These include things like&nbsp;<strong>biosphere integrity, ozone depletion, ocean acidification, and a relative newcomer known as \u201caquatic deoxygenation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although these thresholds are discussed with deadly seriousness, scientists wonder if the reverse of these doom-and-gloom thresholds\u2014<em>positive<\/em>&nbsp;tipping points, if you will\u2014could help encourage people, communities, and countries to adopt more aggressive green policies. In a new study, published in the journal&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1007\/s11625-025-01704-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sustainability Science<\/a><\/em>, experts from the University of Exeter in the U.K. explain these positive tipping points would be moments in society\u2019s adoption of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/green-tech\/a43894117\/nyc-skyscraper-carbon-capture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">green technologies<\/a>&nbsp;or behaviors that could perpetuate a cascade of positive outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOther transformations\u2014such as a major shift away from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/environment\/a28646193\/climate-change-land-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meat consumption<\/a>\u2014might also be more likely than they appear,\u201d Steve Smith from the University of Exeter said in a press statement. \u201cIn other sectors there is little sign of approaching tipping points and in a few, such as nuclear power and concrete production, we should not expect there to be tipping points at all.\u201d<br><br>\u2026Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/green-tech\/a65616655\/positive-tipping-points\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/green-tech\/a65616655\/positive-tipping-points\/<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No mention of the 1.5C target. I mean, 5 minutes research could have turned up the fact that fish thrived during distant past extreme warm periods, that the entire biosphere thrived. Visiting hot climates to catch big fish is a major tourist industry in places like Florida and Australia\u2019s far North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Temperatures drop substantially as you move further from the equator. Any species which felt uncomfortable in a warmer climate would just relocate. All species are continuously adjusting their range, seeking out the best possible habitat, probing the edges of their habitable range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why write such nonsense? Why would anyone believe such outlandish claims?
