class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent months, several large hydrogen projects in Europe have been cancelled, postponed or greatly downsized, mainly due to high costs, uncertain demand and delayed subsidies.<br>This does not only apply to Germany, where it seems almost hopeless to produce even more expensive hydrogen from expensive electricity. Other countries are also affected.<br><br>Here are some of the most important cases:<br>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Germany<\/strong><br>\u00a0LEAG (Lausitz Energie): The planned green energy centre on the site of decommissioned coal-fired power plants in eastern Germany was postponed indefinitely in June 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ArcelorMittal: The conversion of two steel mills to green hydrogen (\u20ac2.5 billion project) has been paused despite \u20ac1.3 billion in subsidies<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Statkraft: In May 2025, the Norwegian energy company stopped the development of new green hydrogen projects, including projects in Germany.
