School of Enterprise and the Environment, University of Oxford<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the cold war, the US and Soviet Union were locked in a desperate race to develop cutting\u2011edge technologies like long-range missiles and satellites. Fast forward to today and the frontiers of global technology have pivoted to AI and next\u2011generation energy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past six months, the Trump administration has upended half a decade of green industrial policy. It&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/07\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-ends-market-distorting-subsidies-for-unreliable-foreign-controlled-energy-sources\/\">has clawed back<\/a>&nbsp;billions of US dollars in tax credits and grants&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/energyinnovation\/2024\/08\/19\/inflation-reduction-act-two-years-later-historic-industry-investment\/\">that were supercharging<\/a>&nbsp;American energy innovation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, household energy spending in the US is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/energyinnovation.org\/report\/updated-economic-impacts-of-u-s-senate-passed-one-big-beautiful-bill-act-energy-provisions\/\">expected to increase<\/a>&nbsp;by US$170 (\u00a3126) each year between now and 2035 as a result of Trump\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/articles\/2025\/07\/president-trumps-one-big-beautiful-bill-is-now-the-law\/\">One Big Beautiful Bill Act<\/a>. The bill, which includes sweeping changes to taxes, social security and more, will raise energy costs mainly because it strips away support for cheap and abundant renewables like wind and solar.<br><br>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>China, with its authoritarian government, is less susceptible to the petroleum-obsessed dogma fueling the Republican party. It does not have prominent leaders like US politician Marjorie Taylor Greene<\/strong>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/pete-buttigieg-marjorie-greene-electric-cars-b2196087.html\">who previously warned<\/a>&nbsp;that Democrats are trying to \u201cemasculate the way we drive\u201d by advocating for electric vehicles. Rather, China\u2019s leaders are seeing green \u2013 not in the environmental sense, but in a monetary one.<br><br>\u2026Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-the-us-is-letting-china-win-on-energy-innovation-261109\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/theconversation.com\/why-the-us-is-letting-china-win-on-energy-innovation-261109<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lezak has written some pretty diverse studies based on his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk\/person\/stephen-lezak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oxford bio<\/a>. The first two papers cited in his bio relate to the Gobi Desert and Mongolia. He wrote a paper on climate change and Alaskan tribal politics in 2024. Since the election of Trump, he seems to have refocused on Britain and Oxford University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, the claim renewables are cheaper, which appears to be the basis of Lezak\u2019s criticism of Trump, is total nonsense \u2013 otherwise California and Europe would have the cheapest energy in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-watts-up-with-that wp-block-embed-watts-up-with-that\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Z6LOr4iSNu\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2025\/05\/06\/the-renewable-energy-trap-a-warning-to-nations-pursuing-blind-sustainability\/\">The Renewable Energy Trap: A Warning to Nations Pursuing Blind Sustainability<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;The Renewable Energy Trap: A Warning to Nations Pursuing Blind Sustainability&#8221; &#8212; Watts Up With That?\" src=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2025\/05\/06\/the-renewable-energy-trap-a-warning-to-nations-pursuing-blind-sustainability\/embed\/#?secret=XMWlJGNBQx#?secret=Z6LOr4iSNu\" data-secret=\"Z6LOr4iSNu\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lezak\u2019s praise for authoritarianism in my opinion suggests shallow brochure thinking, accepting Chinese propaganda at face value. Such thinking ignores some ugly realities, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2024\/03\/03\/does-the-alleged-climate-crisis-justify-ignoring-accusations-of-chinese-slave-labor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China\u2019s alleged extensive use of slave labor in their renewable industry<\/a>, and authoritarian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2021\/09\/28\/china-suffers-widespread-blackouts-as-climate-targets-bite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">China\u2019s chaotic mismanagement of domestic energy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.project-syndicate.org\/commentary\/response-to-china-housing-crisis-will-exacerbate-demographic-decline-by-yi-fuxian-2025-07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">centrally directed resource misallocation<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspistrategist.org.au\/china-is-on-course-for-a-prolonged-recession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self inflicted economic problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-watts-up-with-that wp-block-embed-watts-up-with-that\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"0H0NruEr2q\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2024\/03\/03\/does-the-alleged-climate-crisis-justify-ignoring-accusations-of-chinese-slave-labor\/\">Does the Alleged Climate Crisis Justify Ignoring Accusations of Chinese Slave Labor?<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Does the Alleged Climate Crisis Justify Ignoring Accusations of Chinese Slave Labor?&#8221; &#8212; Watts Up With That?\" src=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2024\/03\/03\/does-the-alleged-climate-crisis-justify-ignoring-accusations-of-chinese-slave-labor\/embed\/#?secret=hyoLSWDbBk#?secret=0H0NruEr2q\" data-secret=\"0H0NruEr2q\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for China\u2019s lack of dissenting voices and alleged resistance to dogma, people who live in China who criticise dictator Xi Jinping\u2019s policy ideas, sometimes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-64781986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they disappear.<\/a>&nbsp;Some of them reappear a few months or years after their disappearance, if they are lucky. The people who reappear usually lead much quieter, less public lives than they did before disappearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stephen Lezak may see this authoritarian willingness to intimidate and crush dissent as some kind of advantage. Luckily I live in a country where for now at least I am free to disagree with this opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-videopress\"><div
