Only 4% of Canadians think climate change is our top problem.
But many of them are hard-core activists ready to block projects.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past several months, public concern about climate change has declined dramatically<\/strong>, replaced by newfound enthusiasm for the development of Canada\u2019s vast oil and gas reserves. The federal government is now under mounting political pressure to expedite the construction of pipelines<\/strong> to tidewater that will bring economic growth, employment, energy security and funding for social programs or tax relief.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What caused the sharp reversal in public opinion?
And will the government actually deliver?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/strong> has long championed climate catastrophism and<\/strong> a commitment to net zero<\/strong>, both in his various jobs on the world stage and in his 2021 book, Values. After<\/strong> entering politics, however, he has embraced fossil fuels<\/strong>, and the legacy media have joined him<\/strong> in a head-spinning abandonment of its obsessive focus on global warming\u2019s alleged existential threat to humanity. Whether Carney\u2019s transformation reflects transitory political expediency or<\/strong> is an overdue acknowledgment of<\/strong> economic and scientific reality<\/strong> is now key to Canada\u2019s economic prospects.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

Over the past four decades, incessant advocacy<\/strong>\u00a0from the scientific establishment, media and opinion leaders made first\u00a0global warming and then climate change the consensus view.<\/strong>\u00a0Deviation jeopardized reputations and careers, especially for scientists and academics, who risked losing funding or even their jobs. It was no surprise, then, that\u00a0in 2022, 73 per cent of Canadians\u00a0believed<\/a>\u00a0we were confronting a climate emergency<\/strong>. But\u00a0now<\/strong>, according to a recent Leger poll,\u00a0only four per cent<\/strong>\u00a0say<\/a>\u00a0climate change is the number one issue facing Canada.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Donald Trump\u2019s shocking tariffs and 51st-state talk have diverted Canadians\u2019 attention from climate change. And so have the\u00a0exorbitant costs of green policies,<\/strong>\u00a0the growing realization that nothing Canada does can measurably impact global temperatures, and the fact that\u00a0green policies<\/strong>\u00a0either\u00a0weren\u2019t adopted in many countries<\/strong>\u00a0or have became\u00a0politically toxic in countries where they were.<\/strong>\u00a0Despite literally trillions of dollars being spent globally on reducing emissions, hydrocarbons\u00a0still account<\/a>\u00a0for over 80 per cent of the world\u2019s primary energy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

According to McKinsey, achieving net zero globally by 2050 would\u00a0cost<\/a>\u00a0the Western countries a prohibitive $275-550 trillion. That makes it politically untenable.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

Wall Street Journal columnist Andy Kessler recently\u00a0argued<\/a>\u00a0that green policies are largely responsible for European\u00a0GDP falling<\/strong>\u00a0from equal to American in 2008 to just two-thirds of it today. Soaring energy prices have led to de-industrialization, compounding the effects of high taxes and social spending, intrusive regulations and a protected workforce.\u00a0Canada<\/strong>\u00a0also, and for similar reasons, suffered a\u00a0lost decade:<\/strong>\u00a0growth of just half a per cent in real GDP per capita \u2014 compared with 20.7 per cent in the U.S.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And maybe the public has finally become\u00a0skeptical of endless prophecies<\/strong>\u00a0of impending disasters: \u201cendangered\u201d polar bears almost tripled in the past 50 years; hundreds of Pacific islands have increased in land size; death from extreme weather\u00a0decreased<\/a>\u00a0by 99 per cent in the past 100 years; nine times as many people die from the cold as the heat; and so on. The Little Ice Age\u00a0ended<\/a>\u00a0in the late 19th century with a gradual rise in temperatures \u2014 if not, we would still be in an ice age. Yet just\u00a014 months ago, UN Climate Change Executive<\/strong>\u00a0Secretary Simon Stiell\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0we had only two years to save the planet.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

Future psychologists, economists and historians will examine\u00a0the early 21st-century phenomenon of collective climate hysteria, what drove it, what ended it (if it\u00a0has\u00a0ended) and what damage it wrought.<\/strong>\u00a0One thing is all but certain: there will be no admission of guilt for the enormous harm inflicted on Canada and other economies.\u00a0Although the public has moved on, a hard-core group of climate militants is prepared to exploit every legal and regulatory impediment to resource development in Canada.<\/strong>\u00a0The federal government will have to use all its legislative and executive authority to\u00a0push the new energy projects it says it favours through to completion. Only then will Canadians know<\/strong>\u00a0whether Mark Carney has truly changed his core beliefs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
