Even in green energy subsidised Britain, developing renewables does not make economic sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why wind farm developers are pulling out at the last&nbsp;minute<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Published: June 10, 2025 2.41am AEST<br><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/thomas-york-1543701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thomas York<\/a><br>Postgraduate Researcher in Human Geography, University of Leicester<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/clean-power-2030-action-plan\/clean-power-2030-action-plan-a-new-era-of-clean-electricity-main-report#summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">government aims to generate<\/a>&nbsp;at least 43GW of offshore wind power (current capacity is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewableuk.com\/energypulse\/blog\/uk-wind-and-global-offshore-wind-2024-in-review\/#:%7E:text=UK%20offshore%20wind,offshore%20wind%20projects%20fully%20commissioned.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14.7GW<\/a>) and 95% of all energy from renewable sources by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These targets are now in jeopardy. The cancellation of Hornsea 4&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-norfolk-66263340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">follows a similar decision<\/a>&nbsp;by Swedish developer Vattenfall, which stopped work on its 1.4GW Norfolk Boreas wind farm in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building a wind turbine requires significant amounts of steel, copper and aluminium, all of which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/electric-power-and-natural-gas\/our-insights\/renewable-energy-development-in-a-net-zero-world-disrupted-supply-chains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doubled or tripled in price<\/a>&nbsp;between 2020 and 2023. Turbine manufacturers have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/wind-turbine-makers-struggle-find-pricing-power-2022-05-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raised prices<\/a>&nbsp;in an effort to recover recent losses. This affects the profitability forecasts of wind energy developers like \u00d8rsted and the viability of each of their projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rising costs mean that even one of the world\u2019s biggest wind farms, Dogger Bank in the North Sea,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upstreamonline.com\/exclusive\/worlds-largest-offshore-wind-farm-unprofitable-for-equinor-say-government-funded-researchers\/2-1-1098012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will not be profitable<\/a>&nbsp;for its developer, Equinor.&nbsp;As a prospect for generating financial returns, renewable energy still cannot compete with oil and gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the key argument of economic geographer Brett Christophers in his recent book&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/books\/edition\/The_Price_is_Wrong\/_B7BEAAAQBAJ?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Price is Wrong<\/a>. Christophers argues that,&nbsp;if national governments continue to rely so heavily on private sector investment to build renewable energy, decarbonisation is unlikely to proceed as fast as it needs to. When you factor in the cost of the days or weeks of battery backup which would be required to absorb overcapacity on good days, and feed the grid during prolonged wind droughts, there aren\u2019t enough government printing presses in the world to produce that kind of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wind outages can last more than a week.
