Heat pumps are not guaranteed to save households money in the long-term, the Government\u2019s Chief Scientific Adviser has conceded. The Telegraph <\/em>has the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A meeting chaired by Professor Dame Angela McLean found it was \u201cnot currently clear\u201d if heat pumps were cheaper to run<\/a> than a traditional gas boiler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The revelation comes amid Ed Miliband\u2019s push for homes to switch to low-carbon heating<\/a> as part of a drive to reach Net Zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heat pumps, which can cost up to \u00a313,000 to install<\/a>, are the backbone of the Government\u2019s green agenda, despite concerns they can negatively impact a property\u2019s EPC score, which can make mortgages more expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minutes from a roundtable discussion chaired by Prof McLean in January were published by the Office for Science on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report cited heat pumps as \u201ca major financial decision and long-term commitment,\u201d adding \u201cit is not currently clear that heat pumps will save people money\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting, attended by climate minister Kerry McCarthy, was held with the ambition \u201cto provide accessible science advice for policymakers\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It cited a 2023 study by Polish academic Agnieszka Kijo-Kleczkowska, which found the shortest payback time for a heat pump, together with solar panels, was 11 years and six months. It noted this would be \u201cunacceptably long to many\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Households can still claim grants worth up to \u00a37,500 for the installation of a heat pump, and Labour is looking at expanding grants to include different types of models such as \u2018air-to-air\u2019 heat pumps, which can also function as air conditioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard Tice, Reform UK deputy leader, said: \u201cAnother net zero policy unravels as heat pumps are shown to be an expensive con. People have been deliberately wronged in another major mis-selling scandal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even with a grant, a typical heat pump costs \u00a313,000 to install \u2013 and according to YouGov polling, most households are reluctant to pay an additional \u00a35,500 themselves.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
