Her statement to&nbsp;<em>STAT<\/em>&nbsp;that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/05\/23\/national-academy-sciences-nasem-layoffs-after-trump-cuts-contracts-worth-40-million\/\">250 people could lose their positions<\/a>&nbsp;by summer\u2019s end had come as news to the roughly 1100 NASEM staff. McNutt told staff \u201cno decisions [have been] made\u201d about the number of coming layoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s no doubt that the 162-year-old honorary society, which produces influential reports by committees of independent experts, is headed for dramatic changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[\u2026]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Academy of Sciences was granted a charter by Congress in 1863 to provide the government with independent, objective advice on science and technology. Its flagship studies have addressed scores of subjects from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/event\/44277_01-2025_research-priorities-for-preventing-and-treating-alzheimers-disease-and-related-dementias-report-release-webinar\">research priorities for Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a>&nbsp;treatment to shaping the next decade of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/event\/44121_12-2024_report-release-event-the-next-decade-of-discovery-in-solar-and-space-physics-exploring-and-safeguarding-humanitys-home-in-space#:~:text=A%20new%20National%20Academies'%20decadal%20survey%20The,space%20physics%20for%20the%20next%2010%20years.&amp;text=The%20Next%20Decade%20of%20Discovery%20in%20Solar,Exploring%20and%20Safeguarding%20Humanity's%20Home%20in%20Space.\">solar and space physics research<\/a>.&nbsp;<strong><em><mark>Because the organization does not have congressional funding, it must raise its own money for the studies.<\/mark><\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Philanthropies fund some, but most are supported by federal agencies. NRC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/read\/27783\/chapter\/2#6\">received $200 million<\/a>&nbsp;in government contracts and grants in 2023, the most recent year for which the number is available.&nbsp;<strong><em><mark>And many of those contracts have been axed by the team of cost cutters at Trump\u2019s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[\u2026]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DOGE website lists 36 of the canceled NASEM contracts, and&nbsp;<em>Science<\/em>&nbsp;calculated the total cost of these losses to be more than $25 million.&nbsp;<strong><em><mark>The list includes a $970,000 contract from the Department of Homeland Security to fund statistical research for a new office of homeland security statistics<\/mark><\/em><\/strong>, a $250,000 contract from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for a June workshop on preventing H5N1 bird flu transmission among farm workers and veterinarians, and a $500,000 study on drought and climate change funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[\u2026]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/national-academies-staggering-trump-cuts-brink-dramatic-downsizing?utm_source=sfmc&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=alert&amp;utm_campaign=DailyLatestNews&amp;et_rid=237382256&amp;et_cid=5632928\">Science!<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>OK\u2026 The National Academies of Science is not funded by&nbsp;<s>Congress<\/s>&nbsp;taxpayers. However, they largely depend on government contracts, funded by&nbsp;<s>Congress<\/s>&nbsp;taxpayers, to fund the organization. Since taking office, President Trump and the DOGE team have been taking a chainsaw to government contracts (a campaign promise made to taxpayers)\u2026 Therefore the National Academies of Science are on the brink of extinction\u2026 Did I get that right?
