Though championed by environmentalists, EPA administrator Lee Zeldin critiqued the feature, writing that \u201ceveryone hates it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStart\/stop technology: where your car dies at every red light so companies get a climate participation trophy. Instead, it costs American businesses and manufacturing millions of dollars, hurting small businesses and the ability to achieve the American Dream,\u201d Zeldin said in the press release, noting that the EPA is reconsidering the program.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2025\/04\/11\/trump-epa-reportedly-axing-obama-era-greenhouse-gas-emissions-disclosure-rule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(RELATED: Trump EPA Reportedly Axing Obama-Era Greenhouse Gas Emissions Disclosure Rule)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement also states that the program is \u201cunlike every other mandatory information collection by EPA under the Clean Air Act\u201d as it is not directly related to a \u201cpotential regulation nor developed with that intention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though not mandated, the implementation of these stop-start credits has led to an influx of vehicles with the controversial feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In model year 2012, less than 1% of vehicles had the start-stop feature, while in 2021, that figure skyrocketed to 45%, according to the spokesperson. In model year 2022, new vehicles with the feature totaled 65%, according to Battery Council Organization&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/batterycouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/BCI_StartStop_Infographic_print_8.5x11-012324.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statistics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also some evidence that the stop-start feature can wear on the engine, unless manufacturers ensure otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe higher number of stop-start cycles lead to increased engine wear unless steps are taken to prevent it,\u201d Autocar, a UK automobile magazine states. \u201cAs a result, car manufacturers and component suppliers have taken many steps to ensure engine wear due to start-stop systems is minimal,\u201d the publication continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The start-stop regulatory credits are found under 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-40\/chapter-I\/subchapter-C\/part-86\/subpart-S\/section-86.1869-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">86.1869-12<\/a>&nbsp;and were granted by the EPA under the Obama administration in October 2012 as part of the \u201c2017 and Later Model Year Light-Duty Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2012\/10\/15\/2012-21972\/2017-and-later-model-year-light-duty-vehicle-greenhouse-gas-emissions-and-corporate-average-fuel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rule<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EPA created a system to reward carmakers with credits for \u201coff-cycle technologies\u201d that cut down CO2 emissions, but don\u2019t show up fully in emissions tests, according to the official.
