Britain\u2019s rush to Net Zero could leave it vulnerable to months-long blackouts, as reliance on intermittent renewables strains the grid, escalating costs and jeopardising energy security. The Telegraph<\/em> has more<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grid operator has raised concerns that the switch from dependable gas to intermittent wind and solar power would \u201creduce network stability<\/a>\u201d and said the cost to taxpayers of funding measures to prevent the system crashing was set to \u201cincrease significantly\u201d to \u00a31 billion a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the global energy watchdog has sounded the alarm over the \u201cpremature retirement\u201d of gas power plants \u201cwithout adequate replacements\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can also be revealed that Government officials have admitted it would take Britain \u201cseveral months\u201d to fully recover from a nationwide electricity outage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain and Portugal were hit by huge power cuts last month, which experts have said were likely to have been caused by their reliance on renewable energy<\/a>. Ministers have played down the prospect of such a blackout happening in the UK, insisting Britain has a \u201chighly resilient energy network\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes after a power cut at Heathrow<\/a> in March, which shut the airport for 24 hours, raised questions about the reliability of the electricity network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National System Energy Operator (Neso), which runs the grid, published a report in that same month, which warned of an increased risk of \u201coutages\u201d. It set out that the reduction in \u201csynchronous\u201d power generation<\/a>, such as from gas and nuclear, in favour of renewables \u201creduces network stability\u201d. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, Britain is having to invest large amounts of cash in \u201cstability network services\u201d, such as mass battery storage, to back up the system. Neso said the cost of these would \u201cincrease significantly by 2030, up to an estimated \u00a31 billion a year\u201d, citing modelling by Imperial College London. \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A report compiled by the Cabinet Office earlier this year found that the risk of a nationwide blackout<\/a> was \u201clow\u201d, but that the effects would be devastating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under such a scenario \u201call consumers without backup generators would lose their mains electricity supply instantaneously and without warning\u201d. This would \u201ccause significant and widespread disruption to public services provisions, businesses and households, as well as loss of life\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government\u2019s National Risk Register found that it would take \u201ca few days\u201d to get a \u201cskeletal network\u201d of power back up and running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added: \u201cFull restoration could take up to seven days, however, depending on the cause of failure and damage, restoration of critical services may take several months.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
